Hi guys here is link above to rifle in question. New member here, recently moved to AZ and recently got the long range itch. I have a couple center fire builds planned out, waiting on a lot of parts and a masterpiece arms chassis for the first build. Just picked up my first good scope.

I’m looking to join some local clubs possibly and maybe do some amateur competitions for fun. Just got a chronograph and kestrel elite.

I’d like to get a setup in the mean time to hold me over and satisfy the itch. After lots of research I’m pretty set on a CZ457 build or just buying one.

I’m looking for at least an 18-20” black straight barrel threaded 1/2x28” and something like an ACC chassis. If I piece together all these parts it looks like it’s just gonna be another long waiting game and end up costing well over $2K.

What are your thoughts on the CZ457 chassis version I posted above? MSRP is a little pricey but I’ve found some in the $1600 price range which seems like a deal to me since it’s on $1300 chassis already? I can’t find a lot of info on this specific model sku though SKU: 02329

Anyone have or have shot this exact setup? Comes with black straight barrel already like I want and threaded 1/2x28. Can’t tell if this is actually a match barrel or not and the MTR action? I could take this right out of the box to the range for fun and start practicing some long range skills and testing ammo. Could take it to competition to see what I really want as well then be able to patiently wait for a barrel to order.

I know most here probably prefer to build their own rifle, but would it really yield me better results and is there a place to find quality barrel and not wait 3+ months?

Looking forward to your thoughts. Thanks.

Do they make a big clunky wood stocked MTR with a 24" barrel?
I had an MTR but it had cold bore issues so I sold it. I'm thinking of getting another and putting an IBI
Shnooble barrel on it. The standard is 22" but I would prefer a 24" tube. Straight flutes???? Maybe.

The ot5her MTR with the chassis or poly stock both have visually unbalanced barrel to stock length.

Match barrel ? CZ match chamber is just slightly smaller

Barrels with CZ 'match chamber' are used in: MTR,AT-One,MDT,LRP models

Look for MTR with 24' barrel instead of 20'

I don't have that exact SKU, but shot a 20" MTR in an ACC gen1 chassis competitively for a year while waiting for my Desert Precision barreled action to arrive.

That rifle will do what you want and then some. The 24" barrel will help it balance better than the 20" options, but you'll still want 2-3 lbs in the front of the chassis if you get into PRS/NRL22 type events. I've had 4 factory CZ's, only one had the MTR chamber. The MTR held a tighter group most of the time, but had a nasty cold bore shift that was unpredictable. It would be even better if it wasn't threaded, but that is a tiny consideration when you're just getting started and only if you're chasing peak consistency.

How much better is the DPG over the Cz match chamber?
DPG is the best barrel I’ve ever shot, better than any of my factory CZ’s, Anschutz, B14R, Shilen barreled Vudoo, and MW. My MTR was good, if you factored out the cold bore shift - but you can’t do that during a match.

I'm definitely in the build it yourself camp. However, I totally understand not wanting to wait 3-4 month to get it done. One of the reasons we made certain choices with upgrades was because we were able to shoot our MTR for a while before buying parts. Hindsight is 20/20 and could have done it cheaper, but also wouldn't have been able to make as informed a decision without the experiences.
  • I think the Chassis version is a decent setup, but it all depends on how you're going to be using it. Are you planning to do NRL and PRS? If so you'll want to add weights to balance it out until you can get a bigger and heavier barrel. Value wise it's not really saving you much. The MTR barrels are good, but they just don't weigh enough for a good NRL or PRS setup. If you use weights to balance out the rifle, you'll probably be spending $300+ to balance it out with the factory barrel.
  • I understand you want a threaded barrel to shoot suppressed, but no one I know shoots suppressed in competition. Unlike centerfire, rimfire is extremely dirty and in NRL or PRS competition you don't want the little bits of carbon and fowling to fall back into your bolt and chamber when holding the rifle muzzle up. This is a non-issue with benchrest, but I don't know how many shoot benchrest suppressed.
    • If you're okay not running a suppressor for a while, picking up a regular Varmint MTR or Varmint would get your some good experience under your belt and leave plenty of money left over to get upgrades on order like the Chassis and Barrel. The new Gen 2 ACC is much better suited to Rimfire and cheaper than the Gen 1 ACC.
  • As for what barrel to pick for a custom build, it all depends on how long you want to wait.
    • Lilja and Modacam will probably be your best option for something really nice and will do threading. There are other gunsmiths out there who will spin up something nice but I'm not familiar with all of them. Again, if you're doing NRL and PRS, there are limited options for heavy barrels for balance. Though with a chassis you can use weights instead.
Hopefully that helped a bit.

I've been using my suppressor on my 22 getting it ready for prs22 but the carbon thing is real. if I didn't need a few extra ounces at the muzzle I wouldn't use it. after just 100 rounds it adds a significant change in weight over a couple hundred rounds.
I currently clean mine every time to fight this.

Hey guys! Thanks for all the help. Planning to try out my first NRL 22 match on 08/04 just for fun. Won’t be using the suppressor for a match. Still like to be able to shoot everything I have suppressed when I want, just for fun. Still interested in building a CZ eventually. However, in a grand turn of events I ended up completely going a different route for now. Bought a Bergara B14R 20” heavy barreled action from A&J sporting goods. Planning to put it in a MDT Premier Gen 2 chassis and trigger tech diamond. Thanks for your help!

you will be happy with the B14R. I have 2 factory guns with 18" barrel in factory stock. I also have EC V2 tuners on both.
