On gun…
Guys,

Does the vintage sniper rifle match in Quantico still take place? If so, when and are the rules published?

I’ve failed to find this info via search.

Next Vintage Sniper Matches at Quantico Shooting Club are September 21 and 22, 2024.

Vintage Sniper

The Vintage Sniper Team Match is designed to reproduce the conditions under which skilled long range military snipers operated. Two riflemen work together as a team. During the match, each team member functions alternately as a shooter or a spotter. After one team member finishes firing, they switch roles and the other team member fires. Firing is done at distances of 300 and 600 yards from the prone position. Shooters may use either a sling or sand bag support, but not both. Wind doping is critical and firing must be done quickly; targets are exposed for each shot for only 20 seconds and then withdrawn for 20 seconds. Information from the CMP on Vintage Sniper: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IRmse74etlE4K63o0W4DKIJCn9Z9W8vZKLBEXqbGCE8/edit

  • Sighting - 300y - Unlimited shots in 5 minutes
  • Stage 1 - 300y - 10 shots prone, 20-seconds each target exposure (sniper)
  • Stage 2 - 300y - 10 shots prone, 20-seconds each target exposure (spotter)
  • Sighting 600y - Unlimited in 5 minutes
  • Stage 3 - 600y - 10 shots prone, 20-seconds each target exposure (sniper)
  • Stage 4 - 600y - 10 shots prone, 20-seconds each target exposure (spotter)

Next question.

Is there a match that allows M40A1/3/5 rifles? Maybe my previous question about the “vintage” sniper rifles doesn’t apply.

You’ll fit right with any USMC precision weapon, esp with any M40 series rifles.

Seems odd that a Unertl 10x wouldn’t be considered vintage. Or, at least obsolete.
Although Unertl went under in 2008, Remington still exports and supports the M24 with Leupold 10X scopes. Japan and Israel carry them.

So ... not necessarily the Unertl itself, but the fixed 10X is still in (current) modern issue.

Fixed 10x is capable, for sure. What I said was more a reference to the BDC and MOA knobs paired to a Mil reticle (not unlike the Ultra/Mk4 on the M24, I guess) in comparison to more modern optics.

Are modern optic systems better? Kinda. Easier to learn on, 100%, but thousands of us (I was not a sniper) learned to mil and hold with MOA knobs and a mildot reticle. (Think mildot master and weapons log book days) I wouldn’t want to be exposed to a guy who was trained and using a fixed 10x “mixed” scope.

Edit. Or for that matter, a guy who trained with an ‘03A1 and a fixed externally adjustable.

Or.. a trained guy with a pile of shit 4x on a Mosin…

There may be a trend here.🤔

No, newer optics aren’t necessarily better, but I do consider them more precise. I’m just surprised the M40A1/Unertl doesn’t fit in the “vintage” category of the rule book.

This sounds like a REALLY good reason to build an ‘03A1 with a Criterion barrel, and a new Malcom scope with the upgraded mounts. If you don’t have one,,, I think you may really enjoy it. They are unbelievably capable rifles. VERY hard to shoot consistently from a sling and coat, but off bags these things rival modern rifles, albeit with a ehhh trigger.

No more gun projects!

Besides, I already have a Unertl 8x USMC SNIPER and the corresponding M1941 Springfield.

I just wanna shoot my A1!

An original 8x…. Mmmmmm.

I hear you. I haven’t built any of the M40s. I like and tend to build the SF rifles but I “feel” that I should have an M40A1. Seems wrong to not have at least one smear stock in the safe.

Off topic but… I think, if given the option, it would likely be a M25. I know it’s not as accurate and a pain in ass to keep tuned but they are damn sexy bitches.

FYI, the Quantico matches have 3 categories: vintage, Vietnam and Modern. CMP does not have a “modern” category. Anything after Vietnam is considered “modern.” Its best to have a partner who is using a rifle in the same class.
