Rifle Scopes Nightforce Velocity reticles?

What does everyone think of the Nightforce Velocity reticles on a SDM/ hunting type rifle? Any reason to get a Velocity 600 over a Velocity 1000? The rifle is a Scar 17 and the reticle would be going in a MOA 2.5-10x32 that currently has a NPR2 in it

The Velocity 1000 is not available for the 2.5-10x32; only the Velocity 600.

The Velocity 600's work extremely well as they are well within the allowable variance for atmospheric changes to impart a large amount of change.

The V600 is calibrated at 10x, but being second focal plane, you can fine tune your BDC for slower rounds, by slightly decreasing the magnification.

If you have the NP-R2 and like it aside from the line thickness being too thin and would like even graduations on your windage and elevation bars, consider the MOAR as it is available in the Compact 10x.

Velocity 600 is a great hunting reticle. The owner uses a couple velocity reticles on his hunting guns. For a 308 its usually the LV reticle, but use the nightforce reticle calculator to check that.

Why would you not get a Mil or MOA reticle in a scope that capable?

I've never used one, but about purchased one, you must realize your load needs to match almost to the T. Their reticle calculator fails to figure in elevation, or it did, I almost spent 1300.00 bucks on something I couldn't use, thankfully I had NF"s exball program. If Jupiter aligns with mars, and your load fits it in also, it will be sweet, no matter which one you get, but?

I have a friend who has a Ziess Z-plex 600, on a 7mm WSM hunting rig, and with his load, the reticle is deadnuts to 700, using the pillar at 700, like I said, it's sweet and quick.
If you're positive it will work, go for it, but if you're going to have to use it questioning things, and holding under, or over, it might be just as quick to dial your turret.
These reticles, when they work are a good as it gets, but any variance and it gets iffy.

Would you buy a watch that has stopped on the basis that it will indicate the accurate time once each day?

Yes, I bought one for a custom .338 Lapua. I spent some of time matching the load to the reticle, and with a little work, I was able to get everything to match just fine. It is a great system if your are willing to put the work into load development and bullet bc selection. If you like to switch loads and bullets all the time, it is not for you, but if you are willing to put a load together and stick with it it will work very well. I found the reticle and bullet combination to be very fast and accurate. If you are going to be traveling to extremely different climates and elevations, it will not be as accurate as if you are staying in the same relative shooting environment.

Their reticle calculator allows you to input temperature, pressure, humidity, altitude, as well as density altitude. Has been that way for the past couple of years.

Once you calculate everything it also shows the deviation of the reticle. It's a pretty simple system to understand.

Nightforce Velocity reticles?

Why would anyone spend the time, money and barrel life to develop a load to match a reticle?

What does a velocity reticle do that a standard gradiated reticle doesn't do?

Wouldn't it be easier to take the ten minutes required and learn how to use Mils or MOA?

You're thinking too much like a guy that shoots. You have to dumb it down and think like someone who doesn't. Come and work the phones at the store for a day any you would realize that i would say close to 80% of the general shooting population doesn't know what a mil or moa is much less how to use a fancy scope with a bunch of lines in it. Now tell that guy to go get a ballistic app and make up a dope card (I say the word dope sometimes and people are like "what's dope).

Everyone here sees the value of a mil or moa based reticle over a velocity based reticle. Is it easy enough to learn? Of course. But don't fool yourself into thinking that people aren't lazy or just honestly don't have the time to allot to doing something they might only get to a handful of times a year.

I guess that I didn't think that I was lazy or dumb when I bought my velocity reticle and put the time and effort into making it work. I thought that Nightforce had a good idea, and wanted to try it out. I shoot at least every other week, and have participated in long range competitions before. I own several ballistic apps, and know how to use both mils and moa....I have a log books with dope on all of my long range rifles. I could do without the condescension and arrogance....I bought my last Nightforce ATACR from you. Don't treat your customers with contempt.

Marines used White-Out to mark their BDC on the Redfield hunting scopes, sort of speak, only because they had no other alternative. Unfortunately, they didn't have today's reticles. Otherwise, they would have used them [emphasis added]. With that in mind just buy an inexpensive new Redfield and do what the Marines did. White-Out is cheap. Nightforce is not.

Chris is right, I used to work for a major scope manufacturer repairing riflescopes. Some of the letters I would read from customers would blow your mind. I had customers that expected the scope to do everything except pull the trigger. I also saw zero arrogance or contempt in his post.

I almost bought one for my hunting rifle. I did the calculations and thought it was badass. It shows the path being " one inch high at 300 and at 700 it might be an inch low". But for hunting , who cares, that is good enough.

The other key point. You can still dial your dope if you don't want to use the velocity reticle.

I stuck with tried and true MIL MIL, but I was impressed. Also, you can just as easy, hold 3.6 mil's for 500 yards with your MLR.

Every avid shooter should have to spend some time on a zero range prior to hunting season. It can get a little frightening at times.

I personally would not get a ballistic reticle due to the limitations it places on the load you are using. Those marks don't do anything but clutter things up if they aren't in the right place. While ballistic turrets have the same limitations as far as load matching, at least they are a relatively inexpensive and user changeable feature if you don't like it or switch loads. Reticle changes are comparatively more expensive and require a trip back to the factory.

You're reading too much into it my friend. Graham has it right in that their was no arrogance nor contempt in my post. I was merely stating a fact. I in fact take great joy and pride in taking the time to make sure that each and every one of my customers completely understands how to use the system that they choose. 90% of my sales calls last between 25-35 minutes but also go past the 40 minute mark on many occasion. The whole reason that I do what I do is because I enjoy shooting and really enjoy teaching others what I know. I cringe when I see posts on the internet that are something like "I bought this new scope and now I need to learn how to use it." One thing that set's us apart from the competition is that we take the time to educate and follow up with customers to make sure that everything is working the way they expected especially with new shooters.

I defiantly agree. I see this in all disciplines of shooting, not just hunting. I think about how many people conceal carry every day and never bother taking any type of defensive handgun training. They think that just because they can shoot little tiny groups on a square range they can effectively put rounds on target when it counts. I always encourage getting out of your comfort zone. Makes us better in the long run.

Just use Speed Drop or cartridges like 556 and 65 have pretty well built in BDC to almost 600
