M70 ish

@roostercogburn98;

Any progress on this project?
Barreled action is done. Awaiting unertl block mounts and cerakote

Updated the scope for the m70ish build. Felt it was appropriate to have black mounts, even if they are a later production set. The scope would probably be late 50s to early 60s based of serial number, but that is just a wild guess. IF it is that date range, then it matches the guns 1962 date fairly well.

I have also decided to look for a take off sporter stock as I don’t like the lines or overall looks of the one I purchased. Maybe that will change when I actually set the metal into it though.

New scope, hopefully in my hands Monday or Tuesday

Looks great!
Scope came today. I was nervous when the box appeared, it has been through hell and back a few times on the way to me.

Scope looks phenomenal despite the terrible packing job. Pretty sure it is a 2 inch ultra varmint with a plain head. Glass is super clear, and adjustment knobs have very audible clicks as they dial. Overall, I think this will be a superb fit for the m70ish.

I know I posted the auction photo of the take off stock, but those photos don’t do it justice. This thing is sharp, has a few “character” marks, but dang I’m impressed. I think this is the stock I should have purchased from the beginning. One of those things that sing to you and let you know it’s right

Does your your wife know you killed her manx cat and mounted it ? Keeping it hid in the gun room/man cave ???

I know, it's not a manx.... it's a bob...
I always teased we were gonna have the dogs stuffed when they died. She doesn’t don’t is as funny as me.

The cats are evil and will probably outlive satan himself.

What caliber did you go with? Be nice to see it back in the stock with the scope on.
Went with a 20 inch 308, just cause I don’t have a 308 in the stable currently.

Plus this action was originally a 243 so already had the reducer to shorten the bolt throw. Kinda made sense to me.

Gotcha! Looks like a 26 in the vice.
That’s what she said lol.

I was torn between 20 and 22, although 18 had crossed my mind. I think the long unertl would have looked strange on an 18.

Come to think of it, I don’t remember if I said 20 or 22 on barrel. Memory is telling me 20, but that’s a lot of head injuries talking

Nice rifle and project I have enjoyed following this thread.
Been staring at and researching over Peter Hathoway Capsticks pre 64 M70 300 H&H that is up for auction right now.
Sure as hell can't afford it but what piece of history it would be to own it.

Where the hell is that because I want to look.

All those safari grade shooters are high. Good looking piece though, I’m just a simple hillbilly though and like the rough cut ones!
I don't believe there is actually anything particularly special about the rifle in its as built trim since it's not a super grade with high end walnut with ebony tip and grip cap and all that fancy stuff.
It's just because of who owned it and the history and story behind it.
Honestly the rifle you are currently building will most likely be dressed out with a higher degree of fit and finish than the one I mentioned.
It's like comparing an old winchester lever action in mint condition with no history to an old beat up one of the same model owned by John Wayne.

At least he will be getting aids and only aids, unlike your build that you are picking every bad decision and failure piece by piece, it’s like aids then rubbing som clap on it, then sprinkling crabs and warts on top
Well damn, I was hoping this build would make us internet homeboys. Guess the bar is higher than I imagined

Just referring to any of the current pre 64 safari labeled guns and the high/higher prices than a regular one.

I’ll leave the pre 64 22 hornet super grade out of the conversation, but fml

It’s gots some color!!! Almost got a chubby thinking about it. The stock next to it is not mine, it is for another project that will probably make the m70ish look like a dumpster find View attachment 8515237
I like it, I have two. One is ready to go the other is waiting on a McMillan stock.
