Maggie’s The Retired Guy Thread

It's magic.

Hobo Hilton, your article is about the DOW. Bigfatcock posted about the S&P500. They are two different things. Amazon is already one of the top three stocks in the S&P 500. Walgreens (WBA) is also in the S&P 500, so you get both when you buy VOO or a similar low cost index fund mimicking the S&P 500.

As a young man, I dealt with Vanguard. When I left I never looked back. The list of "Fund Managers" I dealt with is long.
Between the fees and taxes taken off the top it became obvious I was buying a lot of blue sky.

It is so hard to take a conversation seriously where one of the interested parties is a big fat cock.

VOO has an expense ratio of 0.03%, so . . . that is almost negligible. Not a lot of fees taken off the top. As for taxes, well, that is the government, not Vanguard, and you have to pay taxes when you have income, so . . . better to have income and pay taxes than not.

LOL, Yeah, I did not know how else to type it out, so I just typed it out.

So, I'm 3 miles into my 4 mile walk in 83 degree, 84% humidity. Sweating like a pig, and I come upon my 90 year old neighbor cutting up a tree that's in his path... I don't think I will age that well.

And yesterday I turned wrong and now I can't bend or twist. I know I am not aging that well. If it is like last time give me about a week and things will get back to normal. It really does suck, now that I am retired and I have all this stuff to do I hurt myself.

Odd thing is I still don't FEEL old....but here I am.

I wish somone could have taken a pic of me a few weeks ago. My 60 year old behind up in a tree on my old ladder and cutting limb by reaching up.

Of course, I paid for it the next few days.

I was retired about 8 years.. I was out driving and a local company had an open house sign. I had an idea of what they did but decided I should stop and check it out.
I wound up getting the VP for my tour,. We started talking about a bunch of stuff and he realized I knew what was going on. He made me an offer and I said nah. He called me 2 days later and made me a better offer which I accepted.
I am now 3 years in and having a ball.
Half mile from home, 8 hour day including paid lunch, no one bothers me all day. I run 8 CNC grinders. I have banked every check since I have been there on top of my original pension. Might start drawing SS this year, is there such a thing as too much money, LOL.

I'm not the guy you asked but here's a clue you must have missed.
"I run 8 CNC grinders." :)

I run 8 CNC grinders making bearing blocks for linear motion systems. I work for THK a Japanese company, the Rolls Royce of linear motion. Our guides are inside many products, other CNC machines, MRI machines, Red Box movie dispensers..................the most interesting is our biggest block which weighs in at 26 pounds it is used under buildings in foundation systems to allow a building to move during an earthquake.

Hey I've seen something like that before. They were used in NOV "hex pumps", the mud pumps we used on the last drillship I was on. The bearings were fine, but the mud pump design was a disaster IMO. We were constantly working on them. I always wanted to bring one of those bearings home and build my own lead sled rifle rest out of it but that never happened....

That could be a slick idea  they have all different pull rates, a nice tight one might work. The new recoil management system for the precision shooters.

Yeah I was thinking along the lines of something like a ransom rest for rifles. With full recoil absorption and does not allow the gun to move at all in relation to the rest/vise for accuracy testing. Maybe a hydraulic dampening cylinder or something to keep it from just slamming to the stops when fired. I'll never do anything with this idea before I die, maybe you can make something happen with it.

Let me ask you a question, you said you took up this new job 8 years after you first retired. Would you have taken it up 8 weeks after?

I am sitting here at week 3...I think, who is keeping track. And after my Friday back blowout I can walk ok, and almost sit down without supporting myself. Last time I did this I was an easy two weeks getting sorted. But the wife says I took a couple days off work, then went back in. This time I am laying down when the back starts to scream at me. I can take a "happy pill" when it really starts to bite me. Time will tell, but I think I might bounce back faster this time. And I really want to get down to my shooting area and test out some 7.5 French I made the other day.

My point is, right now I have SO MANY things I want to do. I had people asking me to come to them before I even left the Sheriff's Office. NO I don't want to work anymore, I want to piddle around on my vast number of projects. Cars, motorcycles, guns, and a TON of yard work. I did a little before the back went, and I did not even scratch the surface.

I turned 65 last month and a few days later ended up in the hospital/rehab hospital for 16 days. Since discharge my new hobby/vocation has been PT to get ready for hunting season. I am stronger than I was a couple of months ago but still a ways to go. I was supposed to do some consulting work for a friend of mine but I have put that on pause to concentrate on getting better.

Probably not, but before I went back to work, I was doing house restorations on my own and I always had one going to have something to play with in between doing everything else that I wanted to do

Extra points just because you have a grapple. My tractor would be almost useless without mine.
I retired in 2017 and never worked so hard in my life since then.

Yes, before the back went again, I would say the same thing. I am covered under my works insurance, but July 1 I will move to the wifes. I would have gone to the Dr if not for this "limbo".

I had a nerve frequency ablation and that worked wonders, hurt like hell when they did it, but so much better after. As soon as I get my new cards I am going to give the Dr a call. It is driving me crazy not being able to do anything.....sucks, I have so much to do.

My grandpa always did the lawn and gardening in that same heat with dress shirts and slacks.

Why did they wear ballroom diner clothing for pulling thistle?

My brother-in-law grows and sell okra, does pretty good with it. It's a very prickly plant that most people hate messing with. He told me his trick was to wear an old polyester suit, the plants just slide off it without sticking him! ;)

Okra, Prickly? Our deer problem is so bad that when we tried to grow anything, including Okra, the deer left us with nothing but the stalk. (No leaves, no branches, no Okra, NO Nothing, but the stalk) So, we harvest our garden on the hoof. What else is there left to do? 👍

I’ve been retired 20 years. I just realized that.
Retired at 55, did all the things I put off until then, and still having fun.
See a lot of whomever is still alive, from VN, and doing some volunteer work.
Joined the Ham club, locally, and found another thing to do at state and natl parks.
Serving on a local veteran committee, and going to 101 Airborne reunions.

It’s a good pic, the guide measured it at 325”. We do have 331# of boned out meat for the freezer so he was a brute. 24 yard trotting (herding run) shot in the first 4 hours of the hunt. He went maybe 75-100 yards. He was just what I was hoping for, symmetrical 6x6 with good tops and a chocolate rack. The hunting gods smiled on me.

A friend once gave me some chil-grind elk. And it was really good, too. Just have to be careful to not overcook.

And that was the only elk he got. It can be a once-in-a-lifetime chance of winning the tag, having the finances and time to go. The closest I am ever going to get is a long weekend in west Texas going for mule deer. Even that is going to require some logistics in place.

Most of day to get there. Sleep at my friend's dad's place. Get up before dawn and spend at least a day on glass to get the patterns. There are plenty of mule deer, you just have to know their paths.

Wow, what did you shoot it with?
