Finally got around to assembling my first bolt gun. Plan is to shoot out to 1000 yards for fun and maybe do some deer hunting from box stands or my back porch. Gun ended up a little heavier that I thought close to 20lbs.

Remmington 700 LA
NSS criterion barrel 1-10 twist
NSS recoil lug and barrel nut
Greyboe ridgeback stock
Bedded stock
Greyboe bottom metal
Accu-Tac bipod
Sawtooth arca rail
leupold mark 5 5-25x56 in mils
Area 419 20 moa base
ARC M-Brace one piece mount
Trigger Tech special 2 stage

Haven’t got the chance to shoot it yet but already looking at building another one. Next investment will be some reloading equipment and go down that rabbit hole.

I’ve been running a 30-06 on Quantico’s Range 4 since 2008 or so, first with 208 AMAX, then 208 ELDM and lately Berger 208 Hybrid Target bullets that have all been sent down rage with a German Salazar Serengeti chamber/reamer.

I’m also on my third barrel for this R700 action. Current barrel is a Brux Heavy Varmint 10 twist, finished at 29 inches.

208 Bergers in current barrel run 2730FPS @ 325ASL 70F. The sweet spot for these particular bullets (for me anyway) is between 2710 and 2730 FPS. I’m using Fed 210Ms, Lapua brass and RL17.

In my previous Bartlien 23.5 in barrel I could run the 208 ELDMs at 2750FPS as well.

Very cool!

I toyed with the idea years ago of doing a .30-06 for my first precision bolt gun build. My reasoning was that with reloading you have a wide range of bullets and velocities to play with and that, at least in my AO, there is ALWAYS .30-06 on the shelf since it's only used for hunting around here.

Nice. My first rifle build was an 06. Look up German Salazar he is dead now but some of his articles may still be around on accurate shooter. He used to co.pete with the 06 when everyone else was using newer fancier calibers. Thing is he would place all the time. I think he used 190gr with imr 4350. He had a website that went off line with lots of great info etc.

Nice seeing I'm not the only one playing with the 06 for long range. My first prs build was in 30-06. I ran 175 nosler rdf and hornady 208 eld-m with good results. H4831sc seemed to propel them very consistently. The 175s would get to 2900 and the 208s were clocking in at 2760. There is a considerable difference in recoil between the 175s and 208s.

Call me sentimental...
I like to see the old hunting "standards" put to the lr accuracy test. There's a reason the aught 6, 7 mag and a few others are still going strong despite the marketing geniuses trying to convince every day of something "better". Far as I know, the 30-.06 is still the most popular hunting cartridge today.

You'll definitely need to go down the handloading road once you get bit. It's the only way to wring every bit of accuracy out of the rifle.
Plus, getting proficient at long range means a lot of rounds downrange learning wind calls and factory match ammo will run that bill to obscene levels.

Good luck with it. Let us know how it shoots.

Nice to see another member “discover “ the ‘06! It’s truely a versatile cartridge and is very accurate too. I have no regrets in having mine …

210 SMKs and 208 ELDs are your friends….

While back I made a threat about a precision 3006 build. I'm running hornady 155gr at 2800 fps and it's a blast to shoot. Took it to 1100 yards while back visiting west texas in August but the mirage was horrible. I'm really wanting to load up some 175s and give them a whirl next.

if you want to shoot small groups at long range reloading is a must.
honestly I thought it was fun to learn and experiment. after you really get the hang of it, it's just another chore that must be done to take home the gold.
I *highly* recommend buying expensive dies. I've always had great luck with redding comp dies

Finally got the chance to shoot it. It’s shooting 3/8” groups at 100 yards with factory Hornady 168 grain match. I’ve only shot 4 different types threw it and everything has been sub MOA. Cant wait to start hand loading and see what it will do.
Nice shooting. I been reloading for the 06 since 1989 my go to powder is or was IMR 4064 for sierra 165. Sub moa in my rifle. Problem is that powder is hard to find. Imr 4350 is supposed to be good as well. Both are extruded powders so do not meter well I recommend an electronic powder measure. I got a bunch of AA 2700 a while back and want to try that.

Hope this helps.

Congrats on a beautiful build. I’ve always been tempted to build a 30-06 for long range (900m - 1200m), even with having a 280AI these days I’m still enticed to go with a 30-06 some day in the future.

I have a spare Rem 700 LA Magnum action. I thought about a 7mm Rem Mag (but do not like the recoil). If I have a 30-06 made with that action, will I have to get a new bolt? If build a 7mm Rem Mag, how much less recoil will have if I use a muzzel brake? I have been using APA Little Bastard Gen 3's on some rifles.

Yes you would need a new bolt with a .473” bolt face.

If you build either one, use a good brake like the APA and it will recoil nice and easy, just not for the people beside you.

Nothing wrong with a 7rem mag but the 30-06 with good hand loads will give damn near similar performance with more than double the barrel life.
