Anyone else find it interesting that the book One Second After is set in Black Mountain, NC, which is just a few miles east of Asheville, NC? If you haven't read the book, what are you waiting for?

This coincidence crossed my mind as well. A friend loaned me that novel a couple of years ago. Really good read.Anyone else find it interesting that the book One Second After is set in Black Mountain, NC, which is just a few miles east of Asheville, NC? Aftermath in US of nuclear blasts in atmosphere designed for EMP effect. Actually, a chilling read as it goes into specifics of what happens when everyone loses power/cell/internet/water/food. Very well done.Cliff notes so everyone can determine if they want to read it
Read the hell out of those as a kid.The first of The Survivalist books was set in Boone, NC
I read that as a teen about 40 years ago (damn, I feel old now). Excellent novel.Ever read "Lucifer's Hammer"?
The first book was unbelievably good…very gripping story too.A bit of a spoiler, but in the third or fourth book, turns out the Fed. Govt. knew about everything beforehand and said fuck all the peasants.
Turns out that is usually the way with the alphabet soup in DC. December 7, ‘41 was less of a surprise than the history books would tell us. 9/11 is the same. If and when it all blows up (could be any day now) absolutely no one but a fool would believe it was completely unexpected.A bit of a spoiler, but in the third or fourth book, turns out the Fed. Govt. knew about everything beforehand and said fuck all the peasants.

I agree - very much enjoyed the first two. The third and fourth felt like forced work - the publisher wanted more, so Forstchen threw them together haphazardly. The third book was mid at best and the fourth book was terrible.
First two are totally worth a read for fans of dystopian disaster porn, and I also liked the author's "48 Hours" (a scenario that makes HAEMP seem like a pleasant day at the park).
This is very, very insightful…and unfortunately also very true. This country was built precisely because when problems arose we didn't break down to tribalism and feudalism. All the social engineering over the last 15-20 years has been quite contrary to that culture of communities pulling together and working to build a better place to live or working to rebuild after a disaster.
