Over the weekend I won a Remington 40X in 22lr at an estate auction. It was a bit of a risk because there were only two pictures and a pretty sparse description. Price was pretty good.

Fingers crossed...

If it's engraved "U.S." it's a surplused Army rifle (vice "USMC").

Yours looks like mine from around 2010 -- medium taper barrel and the Remington 700 back-swept bolt handle (as opposed to the straight 721-722 handle).

It should shoot really straight and tight with almost any ammo. I paid the CMP $400 for mine. Yanked it out of the wood stock and had Charlie at Mile High Gunsmithing in Albuquerque bed it into an H-S Varmint stock.

It has a Murphy Precision 20-MOA rail and an SWFA side-focus 10X Super Sniper for scoped work and Centras for iron sight shooting.

One of my nephews running it at 100 yards:

My 40X Started life as a NAVY Trainer. If it was a USMC Trainer it will have USMC on the side instead of US.

It made a visit to Modacam Custom Rifles for a Repeater Conversion. I had the action teflon coated and a Mullerworks Barrel installed. It is an absolute dream to shoot & compete with.

That would be Score High Gunsmithing, not Mile High. Charley Robertson is a top notch smith and has built me 3 of the most accurate rifles I have. I have also purchased many of his tools and have learned much from numerous conversations.

Charley, what a gentleman and scholar. I wish more gunsmiths were like him. There are a few....but he a such a good guy.

Oh, and I almost forgot....very nice rifle. You did well!

I had a chance to make a quick stop at the range. I was able to zero the rifle and shoot a 5 shot group before I had to leave. Five rounds at 50 yards with Eley black box match--.445"

I'm wondering how much the cheap Chinese BSA scope is affecting the precision. Surprisingly, even after being shipped across the country, the scope was nearly zeroed at 25 yards (maybe 1/4 minute to left off, with elevation right on). I also didn't have a chance to clean the bore, which might have been a good thing.

Thanks, 68!

I'd love to get some SK, but can't find any. I have a few boxes of RWS R-50 and that stuff is great but appears to be unobtanium for now.

Any thoughts on how much A different scope would help? I've got Japanese-made Tasco scopes--24X and 6-24X.

Any quality FINE crosshair scope is going to be great for a Benchrest setup. Eley 10X is what was primarily shot in those rifle at that period in time. Mine shot it well in factory form as well as Lapua CX. I only shot less than 50 rounds through it before my repeater conversion and it was all with irons.

Thanks, Defender. Both of my Japanese Tasco's have a fine crosshair with center dot.

Measure groups with calipers using the two farthest shot holes -- from outside edge of grease ring to outside edge of the other, then subtract bullet diameter to give you a more precise reading (than guesstimating where hole centers might be).

Mic your bullet diameter at the fattest part of the bullet, usually the bearing surface.
