Are ALL navy veterans SEALs or just the ones I meet?

Holy Phuck balls. Maybe it’s me but it seems the last 5 guys I’ve met have all claimed to be NAVY SEALs. I’m not even asking, I’m not displaying ANY military stuff. They just come right up to me and it starts off.

Oh blah blah blah told me you were in the service. I just wanted to come over and tell you how I was a SEAL and I got blowed up so that’s why I’m 260lbs of man flab.

I’m like “yeah man, I served as a nothing, doing nothing, I just needed money for college”

Then I let them talk, oh how they talk. They talk about EVERYTHING name dropping names like I even know these people. Idk anyone. Like I said I didn’t do anything, anywhere for anyone.

I just tell them I pushed a muffin cart at the Naval Hospital

I usually thank them for their cervix then laugh about it with guys I know who were on the teams.

Here’s the rub, they guys I know who were 100% on the teams never talk to ME about anything and they don’t need to. I’ve heard a few stories about the training. Enough to know how to spot a fake.

I used to think it was a horrendous crime against our brothers who stood up, raised their hand and willingly sought that life. Turns out they are VP material not criminals.

If you are a stolen valor Phuck like VP hopeful Tim I hope you stub your pinky toe today, tomorrow and the next day.

Next SeAL I meet telling me silly stories I’m posting your pic online.

I worked with two retired navy guys. One was some sort of electrician, the other was a mechanic. Both could mop a floor pretty good. Good guys.

I have/had at least 6 re-tired navy friends who never fired a shot in anger that includes the one who served in vietnam and another who was on the forrestal DURING the fire ,the others destroyer duty .

I started asking them their BUDS class number or where they went to BUDS and got some hilarious answers!! The most common answers is, “it’s top secret. I can’t tell you”

A sweet little old lady co worker saw my veteran plates one day and got EXCITED to introduce me to one of our co workers who tells her hero stories at lunch. Sweet old gal. Her son serves too.

You would never know I’m a veteran, that plate has paid for itself a few times I’ve made less than stellar decisions. Once it was off-roading in the college green space because I was so excited to see snow and make tracks.

I heard a man speak on this very subject. He said total Navy Seals that served in Vietnam were about 400, but there were probably no more then 120 or so there at the same time. He did say over the years he has had at least 1000 men say they were.

Back in the late 90's, when I had a Gun Shop, everyone was a Vietnam sniper. If you asked them about the rifles they would have carried, they all said some super secret BS. I guess today everyone wants to be a Seal

My father-in-law was a PFC and was in the 9th USAAF 410 Light Bomber Group 646th Squadron and he worked in the mess hall. Because he knew some German (from family heritage and relatives,) he was also caretaker for german POWs, giving them work assignments, etc. He was just as important as any flying ace.

He didn't talk much about it but I got to go with him the VFW events. One morning, near their war memorial is a VFW hall where we went for breakfast and "shit on a shingle."

It seems that many want the glory of special forces. The one thing that makes me wonder if someone actually served is when they say they don't hunt (deer) because they have already "hunted the most dangerous game," i.e., humans who can shoot back.

For me, the two things are different. You shoot enemy agents as a matter of war. You shoot deer to harvest and eat.

The best way to verify a SEAL is yes, ask his bud/S class number and also, you can contact Don Shipley, who has dedicated his life to exposing fake SEALs and has access to the SEAL membership rolls.

I used to shoe horses for a guy who claimed to be a SEAL. He had all these stories about his activities which, if true, would probably fall under pretty high security clearance. Anyway, his soon to be ex-wife told me he was a complete and total liar.

I know one legit Seal. Haven't seen him since high school. Every once in a great while I see one of his brothers out and about in town. I've only met 1 USMC scout sniper, friend of one of my paintball team mates. He wasn't too pleased with me, being a civvy, wearing MARPAT camo that day. Made his thoughts known. To his credit, this was early GWOT days and MARPAT was just recently issued, plus he was dealing with the recent trauma of his spotter getting his throat slit. The guy fell asleep with headphones on and an insurgent snuck up on them. The big story tellers I've came across were guys claiming to be tunnel rats in Vietnam.

Yeah its a thing.

My best friend spent several years in the Army. He rarely talks about it (ok we rarely talk about anything other than how much things suck) But he was pretty stoked when we re-visted his old stomping grounds on vacation.

Also he is very rigid about planning, like it was drilled into him or something....

He did it back before it was all cool and shit to be MIL. so bonus for him--kinda got him straightened out for life.

All the ww1, ww2, Korea, Vietnam vets I've met did say shit.
Grandpa taught us the MC Hymn (None of his friends came back--he got lucky and ended up with a lame foot).
Good Friend said he dumped Agent orange on himself.
Homeroom teacher served 2 years, 3 months, and 6 days in Korea.

That's all I ever got outta em.

I asked him about his experience once. He kinda chuckled and said there wasn't much to tell. He said he kept his ass inside the wire and rebuilt field radios for the Marines... Too much going on outside the wire that he wanted no part of.

I knew a Seabee. Not much of an electrician. They paid him to run parts and supplies and tools to job sites. Less actual touching of the work, the better.

But he was a nice guy and had gun collection that would probably rival most average guys here.

My working friend, Lee, who was at my wedding and his wife, Pat, made a hanging banner of wedding photos screened into fabric for us, was a SEAL.

Part of it is yes, the not talking about combat much, if at all. Other than his specialty, which was sneaking into NVA and Viet Cong tunnels and planting charges to remotely detonate, he did not have a body count and did not brag about it. I never saw his paperwork, and this was before it was all the rage to claim to be a SEAL.

He graduated bud/S program (created in 1962) in early 1964 and then spent 3 active combat tours and finally exiting 1969. In his words, "I spent three Christmases on the laotian-cambodian border."

I don't know what his DD-214 would declare and he never showed it to me. He said he was a second class petty officer. On the boat ride home, exiting the Team and the Navy, he was talking with the XO who asked what he thought could be changed aboard ship to make things better. He told him. The XO crapped all over his ideas and he reached across and gob-smacked that XO.

So, he finished the boat ride home in the brig and walked off the plank in the Port of Los Angeles as a seaman.

He had "that look" of someone who has been in combat. Not once did he ask for a veteran's benefit or discount. He was not fond of military healthcare and he said he would have served for free but they kept paying him combat pay. We were, indeed, fighting communists.

His life was not about reliving the days as a SEAL. It was about his grandkids and what cute things they were doing.

I've only met one, when he was in med school. He was the real deal, SEAL Team 2. He had some fascinating stories of what shaped charge plasma jet can do. He's been an MD for probably 15 years now.
