Sardis lake here in Oklahoma isn't much different. Used to be a small community called "Sardis", then was bought up and a damn built by the U.S. Army COE about 45-50 years ago. They flooded the area, creating Sardis Lake. A lot of history is now under water.
Over the last decade, there have been multiple attempts to pipe water out of Sardis Lake to the state south of us. Those have been fought and won up to this point by the Indian tribes (and I normally don't support the efforts of the tribes...but here I do). Currently, the lake and reservoir provide water to a lot of SE Oklahoma residents. I see no need to support another state with our water.
Sardis Lake was once a relatively quiet and rural area (still is by most standards). However, over the past 5 years it has been discovered by the state south of us and land purchases and houses are springing up along it at a rate FASTER than Californians moving to Texas. There is even a 1,200 home development in progress across the highway and in the hills from the lake. Fortunately, the douche that started the project is currently out of money. However at some point that will change. For reference on the size of 1,200 new homes - our county's population is ~12,000 currently.
5 years ago, they finished installing 29 of those giant ugly-ass wind turbines one the tops of the hills surrounding this area. The Windhorse Mountain Wind Facility now pumps out power all the way to MO if I was informed correctly (by a guy who works there). The energy is not consumed here at all...but we get to look at big turbines now that dominate the skyline of what was a beautiful, untouched area.
Now, there is a huge attempt at damning the Kiamichi river to create a water/energy project for that same state south of us.
It is never going to end. People are going to tap the resources of others for their own gain, and there will always be somebody who will sell out their local area for a chance at some of the money.
