I set myself a goal this year to take a deer at 600 yards with an AR rifle. To be sure it was up for the task every time I went to the range even shooting other rifles I shot 1 cold bore shot at 600 to be sure it was always consistent. I carry this rifle to 900 on a normal basis.
This morning i had my chance, 601 yards and recovered him 35 yards from impact. I was just fine with a mature doe but this guy came in today and gave me that chance. One of my favorite hunts now

Rifle is a 16” 308win 178 eldm’s muzzle 2455 fps.

Congrats.

Did you have to tune the rifle for the AB suppressor ?

Couple years back I was spotting for my nephew when he took a doe out at 500 yards. Lots of fun.
I have never shot this barrel without it so honestly I can’t say. I have some others I had before the AB’s & I put them on those and they had a change in POI but accuracy stayed the same.

Specs for the rifle? Factory build with tweaks or your own recipe? Nice system, dude!
+1 What ammo/ components?

My own build, nothing fancy it’s just consistent. It started with a 16” Proof CF and it hated a suppressor so I switched to a 16” Ultramatch to try and keep weight down. It’s a pretty consistent .75 moa shooter and honestly I haven’t dialed in a load for it. I threw three 175/178 bullets over a random known charge that usually works and took one of those and have ran it ever since.
Rifle is a GGP upper/lower/handguard, 16” ultramatch barrel, RCA bcg, Geissele 7.62 tan charging handle, LMT buffer system, Geissele SDE trigger, CMMG zeroed mk3 lpk, superlative gas block, AB supressor, 3-18 Tenmile scope in a adm delta mount. Load is Federal brass (have a ton of it) 178 eldm, TAC 40.5 grains, CCI br2 primers, 2.800 oal.

I used to think big bullets were the key but after shooting mine quite a bit I really like the 150-155gr. Less recoil and fly great out to 600-700 yards.

I have another load I have worked up in my 308 ar’s I have hunted with using 125 gr NBT’s. Can run them hard 3050/2950 from a 20”/16” barrel, fly like a laser, stupid accurate, and will flatten deer and hogs. They hold up equally or better than my 178 match bullets on game, it’s a tough little bullet.

I usually argue that semi auto prefer lighter bullets but......hard to argue with your success.
I think it depends upon the gun. My AR10 clone is stupid accurate with plain old Lake City M118LR. I went to a slightly heavier buffer to make it cycle better with the 175gr bullets, and I never shoot anything else in it anymore.

Sooooo, you baited the 600 y berm of your home range, and shot him from your elevated shooting platform? And, here I thought sitting in a box blind stretched the definition of “hunting.” 🤣

Regardless, nice buck.

Like most any other “southern” hunting it seems like?

Cant all be mtn climbing legends like those western hunters. 😉

I do dig that buck!! Has some cool character.
I’m a life long box dweller, so I’m throwing shade at myself. But, I’ve climbed the mtns too. And, while I’ve done WAY more of the former, I really prefer the latter. And, and, I’d- charitably- call shooting from a box “harvesting” and it’s not much of a “challenge.”

It’s a nice buck and 600y is a fair poke. But, 6 yards. That’s a hunting challenge…

Im just being ornery

I do way more of the mtn stuff based on location, but have sat in a blind (or truck) til the whitetail does come out.
Sneaking around with a bow or a tree stand is a load of fun too.

Honestly, for me, just about any hunting is!

Ouch….. you fella’s ok? Need a drink, hug? Lol

No offense taken, but it took four hunts to do it at 600 vs. could have taken multiple’s closer that traveled natural trails. Much easier to hunt deer going or coming to/from bait than on it in our area.

I’ve hunted mountain areas too without bait using terrain to my benefit.
