Feedback Scammer alert: ojs643 Paypal: [email protected]

What is the answer to this? Do you think if we ask for a picture of the username and date next to the item for sale that may weed out the scammers? I recently replied to an item for sale and got a PM about 5 minutes later saying that they seller was away and to contact him through an email. I knew this was a scam so I reported him. I won't post want ad's anymore because of the scammers.

Good question. I'm not sure what good getting a pic with user name and date would do. Too easy to fake these days. I won't be sending money for anything via any payment service that doesn't have recourse unless I know the person or have done business with them before and can verify their account hasn't been hacked. Sad state of affairs these days. I suppose I've been lucky. I've probably done more than 50 transactions on SH and this is the first time I've had any problem.

I bought the Bartlein MTU barrel from him on Thursday. He has been a member here for 10+ years and had positive feedback. Sad.

I thought it was interesting that his PayPal account wanted to charge me a fee for F&F. I asked him about it and he said it was likely because his PP account had different currencies in it.

Maybe his account was hacked, if he hadn't been active on here in awhile? either way sorry to hear that.

For others / future transactions, if you see a fee on PPFF, hold off or do some homework before paying. PayPal ONLY charges a fee for international payments made using the "Friends and Family" option, meaning you're sending the money to an international acct. The fee is 5% of the total amount sent, with a minimum of $0.99 and a maximum of $4.99

As I keep telling folks and nobody seems to listen.
Insist on a video chat with them and talk to them and look at the item via video chat.
If they can use this website to sell they can figure out how to do a video chat and no video chat no sale.

Not a perfect solution, but for now would help a real lot.

I got the same $4.99 fee at Paypal. I thought it was something new on Paypal.

That should have been your sign that you were dealing with a foreign scammer.

Most likely somebody was careless with their passwords and used them on more than one site and one site got hacked and criminals tried it on this site and it worked.

As someone new on this site (lots of history elsewhere with positive feedback) I would happily do a video call if I was selling something and anything else to try and reduce buyer hesitation. It takes 3 minutes and would also allow the buyer to better inspect the item.

You guys really need to do your homework. I sell on eBay and use PP all the time, I can not sell stuff Friends and Family. If you get a scammer asking for money send it to them as a purchase. If they refuse to ship the product, your good with PP all your money will be back in your account. Also check the people for activity, most scammers have no activity on this forum.

This guy got me for $475. for a Garmin Xero. ojs643 had been on the site for several years and had 5 positive references. He even sent me a PM after I paid saying he got delayed and would be shipping that day. Now the entire PM thread has disappeared and it appears ojs643 doesn't exist here anymore.
Scheels is going to have a black friday sale for $499 starting tomorrow. Hope you get your money back from this piece of crap.

That's not quite accurate. If you don't have a linked bank account, PayPal is charging someone a fee. Either the buyer or the seller but there is a fee, and always has been. If the two people both have a bank account linked, then FF does not have a fee.

I would never link my bank account to PayPal so I know this about it.

PayPal also doesn't provide you any kind of recourse for any gun related items anyway. All that will happen is they will take your money and lock your andaybe both parties accounts. I never understood why so many here use PayPal when they know PayPal hates us. Anywho, sorry yall got scammed. I'd recommend only buy from folks with good feedback, IS ACTIVE HERE, and talk to them on the phone . You will see a red flag and won't get scammed if you follow these rules.

I tried to buy this but I felt like something wasn't right when it had a fee on a F&F transaction.
"Seller" said he'd call me and show me the item then said he didn't want to waste time with that...he needed to sell it right away to get his crossbow paid for. He said he had another buyer willing to use paypal so he could get paid right away. I honestly thought it was an issue with my paypal as it now shows my personal bank account as a "business" bank account. Sorry for your trouble.

I should have investigated further before I sent the money. I just falsely assumed it was a change in Paypal's fee structure since I had never seen it before. Live and learn. Hopefully some other folks can learn from my stupidity and not fall into the same trap.

Might try the above link. In cart price is 459.99, after shipping it’s 476.98 for me.

I haven’t done it. Info comes from a different Garmin scammer post on Hide where guys ended up buying from family firearms and say deal is legit.

There is a bunch of feedback on Family Firearms on Reddit as well. Some good, but mostly bad. They seem to be OK for the Garmin, but lots of issues with firearm purchases from what I read. I did read several posts where people had ordered the Xero and received it within a week with no problems.

That sucks, they are out in force EVERYWHERE - especially this time of year. I hope they all develop functional tastebuds on the inside of their assholes.

My go to is requesting a phone call with the seller + additional pictures (not posted on the hide/forum/group) sent to me via text -- OR-- a Facetime call to talk to the seller and examine the item. It may not always be foolproof, but that + knowing current scam practices should eliminate MOST issues before any $$ is exchanged.

I've recently started wheeling and dealing again here on the Hide and am working to build up some feedback, but have done quite a few transactions/trades on other aligned hobby pages and forums.

Just checked my mail and found out I’m another one to get scammed by this asshat on the Garmin. In my case he agreed to use PayPal goods and services, but refunded the money later in the day because he wouldn’t get paid instantly. I assumed after he went that far might as well do PayPal FF. Never again. I’m close to being done with classifieds and thats a damn shame.

I rolled the dice, but bought from them with my Chase card, and Garmin showed up in about 10 days.. BNIB

I’ve been in the hide for almost 16 years. Never had an issue with scammers until this year. The hide is literally infested with scammers. I get at least one or two every time I make a WTB or WTT post.

Be vigilant. One key indicator is to check if they’re a supporter. If not, be leery. Have a phone call conversation followed up with a video if possible.

There are also many great people here as well. I’ve made several multi thousand dollar deals here with great success.

I just ordered one from them as well. Just under $500 with shipping and insurance. Did the same as you and used my Chase card so I have the purchase protection. Fingers crossed. I will update once it's received.

We’re the 5 positive sells available. Maybe track him to those and have local law enforcement sforward a case to FBI who investigates mail fraud. Or just go get the shithead!!!
