JP Enterprises LRP07/LRI20 impressions

I recently bought an LRP-07/LRI-20 chambered in 6.5 creedmoor with a 22" barrel, added a NightForce ATACR 7x35 and a dead air sandman L suppressor, and took it on a 2 day long range instruction course out to 1200 yards.

I was truly impressed with the precision, ease of use, low recoil, reliability, etc. Ran flawlessly without a single malfunction. You could shoot this thing 1000 rounds and not get fatigued. The adjustable gas block and tunable silent captured spring buffer are so nice. Trigger is crisp and around 2.5 lbs. I had the only gas gun there, but it had no problem keeping up with the bolt guns.

The side charging handle is so easy to use and smooth. Last year's rig was a Wilson Combat Super Sniper in 6.5, which is a great gun, but this is next level. It was well worth the buy in for me because I wasn't interested in trying to build a precision large frame that runs reliably, and was happy to pay the premium for an off the shelf package.

Having shot bolt rifles most of my life and only recently getting into AR shooting, I get the allure. There's just something fun about shooting these large frame precision gas guns, especially suppressed.

For anyone interested in this platform, consider forgoing the competition charging handle (fixed) and going with the low profile folding/collapsible side charge handle. I swapped it out after about a month, and it actually gives more surface area and more leverage for easier charging and clearing.

To those who already have this gun, any recommended modifications?

Best advice I’ve received in a long time was, “Screw getting another bolt gun built. Have you ever heard of JP Enterprises?” That was some decade ago, or thereabouts.

I’ve still got my LRP-07, which was originally chambered in .260 with a JP barrel, but has since been rebarreled to a Bartlein 6.5CM (thanks to my dog @bigjake83 ). I had zero issues with the JP barrel. In fact, just to throw a humbly shameless plug out for JP, it shot as accurately as my Surgeon Scalpel did. Both rifles were chambered in .260, and both rifles shot an identical load.

It’s a rifle that I will never let go of.

That sounds like an incredible setup!
The LRP-07/LRI-20 in 6.5 Creedmoor with that NightForce ATACR must be a dream to shoot, especially with the suppressor. It's awesome that it ran flawlessly for you during the course—no malfunctions is a huge win!

Thanks! I was astounded at how effortlessly it ran. Was shooting Hornady 147 ELDMs in 20 round pmags, and never had a single malfunction over two long days. Locked into a tripod with an arca rail mount and a camping chair made shooting all day a breeze. Feels like cheating with this setup.

Still trying to figure out whether the gold standard kestrel 5700 elite with applied ballistics solver versus the newer kestrel Hornady 4DOF unit gives better results. Hits with 6.5 CM beyond 1000 get hard to spot with heavy mirage, so I had a hard time comparing the two into the transonic range.

Love my Large/Small frame Matching Set

I haven't played with the LRI-20 as much as I'd like but I'll get around to it soon.

Both are Complete JP Rifles, Large Frame LRI-20 and Small Frame SCI-20 but they're both are running my Custom Bartlein Barrels turned by Paul Ross.

My JP LRP-07 came with a roller trigger group, around 4-5 lbs from the factory. I upgraded the spring to get it close to 3.5 lbs. Now, I’m using a Diamond AR-10, which is much nicer.

The JP barrel wasn’t bad; I could get 1/2" MOA groups but generally saw about 3/4" MOA. After wearing out the barrel, I switched to a Rainier Ultra Match barrel in 6.5CM. Now, I’m getting consistent 1/2" groups with my reloads. In PRS, we shoot 10 shots in 2 minutes, which highlights the stock barrel’s deficiencies. Your milage may vary.

Man, that's awesome that it's capable of 1/2 MOA. When I'm shooting this rig, I know that I'm the limiting factor and not the gun, and with better fundamentals I could get better groups. I'm no sniper, just a guy from WV who grew up hunting whitetail.

In case anyone is interested, it's a 1 or 2 day course (your choice) in Rose Hill NC offered by Pilot Mountain Arms, and ran by a retired Delta Force sniper named Brian Searcy. I've done it 2 years in a row and will be back.

I have the same rifle, with the IRAY Hybrid 75 thermal with the very repeatable BOBRO mount and the NF ATACR 4-16 with the GDI QD mount…running suppressed as well. Hoot of combo. Love my JP’s

That's an awesome setup. Thermal is my next big add-on, and there a lot of good options making it hard to choose confidently. Pulsar vs Trijicon, I don't know. Thoughts?

I apologize, IRAY is in the running with Trijicon and Pulsar. For anyone running the new Pulsar thermals, how has return to zero been?

How did you get all those targets to grow like that? I’ve tried, but I’m either planting too deep or too far apart…

Hehe, yeah it's crazy how small the targets look at long distances. Really shows how far we've come with rifle engineering that I can hit targets at this range while not being a legitimate sniper. The machining tolerances for guns like this have gotten so tight, and the off the shelf ELD-M ammo is so good that it's easier than ever to shoot long range.

To be fair to the Wilson, it's a tack driver too, when it runs. Recently had to be sent back because it suddenly started blowing primers (factory Hornady ELD-M 147 ammo), failing to extract, and finally a bizarre squib that I think happened because it actually managed to fire a round without being completely in battery. Unburned powder was everywhere and the bullet barely lodged in the throat. This was a couple weeks before the long range course, which lead to me buying the JP as a replacement because I didn't think the Wilson would come back from service in time. The gun had less than 500 rounds through it at this point.

They said headspace was off and re-barreled it, new BCG with dual ejectors, and a new upgraded buffer spring. I haven't taken it back to the range yet after all this was done, but they treated me right and covered it all under warranty. I don't understand what caused it to go downhill so quickly and out of nowhere. Bad ammo from Hornady is possible, but seems odd.

The JP is just so slick and easy shooting that it's hard to want to shoot any other large frame. Maybe it was a fluke with the Wilson, so I'll give it another chance.
