I’m very, very new to the whiskey/bourbon rabbit hole. I have a buddy at work that’s really into it. He’s always giving me samples. So the journey has been “Well if you liked that, try this”.

That’s how I got the Heaven Hill. I had tried the Wild Turkey Rare Breed and liked it so he told me to try the Heaven Hill. The Rare Breed was good but at 116 proof it was a little hot. The Hill at 100 was just right.

Anyway, I’d like suggestions from you guys. If you liked that try this.

Thanks

Don't be afraid to add a little water when needed. Evian is a good choice. Sadly the days of matching retail distillery water are long gone; "Weller water" as an example.

If you can find or your friend has an older 108.3 proof Rare Breed try it, the latter higher proof versions do not even come close IMO. The higher proof single barrel Russel's Reserve may also be to your liking. Same with plain jane Wild Turkey 101.

Heaven Hill is the parent of Evan Williams, Elijah Craig, Fighting Cock, Henry McKenna and a slew of others. You will find those to your liking as well in the more aged/proofed versions.

Both of the ones you tried have Rye as the flavor grain. Another distiller to try is Four Roses. They use much more Rye and are unique in their approach with ten different mash bills.
