I missed a perfect head shot on a coyote because of an accident like that once about ten years ago. I suppose if someone only ever shoots on a range they wouldn’t see where it matters. If you actually use your rifle though the chance is there. I’m hyper vigilant on checking my turrets now because of that and very much so want locking turrets every chance I get.
I believe in eliminating anything that isn’t necessary. When I’m on deck I make sure that windage is locked on zero and elevation is set to the first target. When finished the first thing I do is zero my turret. I never case my rifle at a match, or lock the elevation turret, so the little spacer takes it off the table.
The counter to that is that a non-translating turret is more complicated with additional small parts and gears to drive the actual shaft that moves the erector tube, while remaining at the same position. It is entirely possible that these small parts are more prone to go out of whack (technical term) and cause the non-translating turret to malfunction if used heavily. The translating turret is corrected directly to the shaft and doesn't have to rely on a more complicated gear system. It's like rack & pinion steering (translating) Vs work and roller (non-translating). (If I remember my car steering technology correctly. Nowadays everything is power steering and the one in my car is electrical, but these things do not exist in riflescopes. Power assisted turrets, oh wow.)
Yes. Your zero is a random hash line, that doesn’t correspond with numerical zero, engraved on the turret body. Granted your zero never corresponds to numerical zero as engraved, but I don’t have to be consciously aware of that when the translating turret design doesn’t show me those engraved lines. Perhaps I’m just a slack-jaw, but it never made sense to me to track the zero position and current turret revolution in my head when a sufficiently thoughtful design declutters the view of the turret and indicates the revolution. Before zero stops were de rigueur you could actually lose your zero if you didn’t have it marked; that recently happened to an acquaintance’s older value line scope on his son’s hunting rifle.
Correct. Some scopes have rev indicator windows which is a nice implementation - TT Marksman, Steiner T6Xi come to mind. I’d say I prefer the windows, but the pop-up doohickey is fine too.

Some of it is marketing but NF ATACR turrets are translating and they're probably unmatched (but definitely unsurpassed) for zero retention. I do wonder about the correlation there if there is one.
