M70 ish

Surprise(mostly) arrived today. I think this one fits way better than any of the others I have tried.

Put it on “paper” today. Only shot it at the 50 yard line, but grouped it 1/2 inch low which should be zero for 100(technically .62 moa) with the current ballistics. Will get out another day and see how close it is. Works like a well oiled machine. Mucho propos to the crew that put it together even though they will go pretty much nameless(he already knows this). Remembering to reset the scope takes a second to get in your rhythm. Just used cheapo 150 grain deer season xp for this. It may or may not go to the deer stand this week.

If you adjust spring tension scope will reset itself. Takes 5 seconds.
I was messing with it some, but apparently didn’t get it right. I’ll continue to play with it and figure it out.

Next I need to reset the turrets to zero. I’m assuming the screw head on the top comes loose and allows it to free spin?

Zeroing torrents is not possible on these 1930’s scopes.
Thanks

Was kinda wondering it that thought was even around back then. Guess I’ll just have to pay attention to where the turret sits. I doubt it will ever get shot far enough to dial any real elevation into it anyway

Spring, just loosen thumb screw on top and push forward on assembly then tighten thumbscrew. About 1/4 to 1/3 spring compression should be fine.

Spring tension should be easy enough to get straight. It didn’t really move much with a 308s recoil anyway

Historically, military use, removed the springs, and similarly hard kicking guns also had the spring "unset" bc the combined recoil and a hard reset broke many a scope.
All of my centerfires are not spring set, my rimfires on the other hand are spring set.
Best to you.

A heavy .308 could handle the spring recoil issue. I have don’e that a lot with this actual scope. More recoil and I agree.

The military scopes were shipped without springs due to concerns with rusting as much as recoil damage. Easier to clean. And yes, they shipped without them, they were not removed later. I had a USMC scope in the shipping box. No spring. The micarta cans were shipped separately.

Regarding the scope position it’s really far back. Normally they work best with scope about even with rear of receiver. This far back will cause even more of issue with low stock, cheek weld. It’s in the most reward position. Easily slid forward. I have used that scope (SN 27x) on many model 70 rifles as well as mod 52 rifles. It works better 1-1.5” forward for me.

Thanks!

Bring this old dead horse back around. The m70ish continues to disappoint(sarcasm font needed, as well as a proper delivery method by me) in the accuracy department. Cherry picked a group today just to give it some positive reinforcement

With that low comb stock, high scope and lack of an easy parallel adjustment system I am thinking your cheek weld is not allowing you get the accuracy it is capable of. Have you considered a lace on riser like the old M1 snipers used but mostly up rather than left? I might have one around. PM if you want to try it and I'll look.

I’ve got a couple of Eagle stock packs I may try later on. I am more than happy with the groups for the most part, barrel just now has 30 rounds on it. Waiting for it to settle some to get serious with it.

thank you for the offer, I may take you up on it sometime down the road for sure

You could also try adjusting the parallex. Call me and I will explain how if you want. I think you have my number.
Yes sir, I have your # saved in the phone. Wrapped up the range day already to get stuff lined up for tomorrow and cleaning up some downed trees.

Next time I get it out, I will give you a heads up and I’ll gladly take your assistance. Thank you!

These are just factory winchester deer season xp. I’m certain they will not get much better, hard to say if I will dive into any load development for this rifle or not.
Example of load development I did back in 2017 when I finished my pre-64 M70 build with vintage 10x and Douglas barrel. It made a huge difference…. Just say’n.

1 shot went low and to the right, but the other 4 shots made me smile:

YMMV, but I suggest load development if you aren’t happy with your rifle’s accuracy.

Oh I’m sure it will get better by a mile. I may play with it some, still undecided. I originally just wanted a plinker and the crew that built this made sure it was far more capable than a plinker by far.

I should have done a better job at laying on some sarcasm with my post. The rifle is phenomenal and classy. I think with my abilities and the ammo I had, that was all it was gonna be today. I’ll get serious with it soon and lay down some better groups.

Is a bartlein barrel, so I know it will shoot
