I have been bitten by the bug to own at least one larger caliber rifle. Everything I currently own is in the 6 and 6.5 family. After doing a bunch of searching on here, I have narrowed it down to the 300 PRC and 300 Norma. Right now I am leaning 300 PRC because I think it would do everything I want. I can't decide if I should just buy something like the Barrett MRAD or buy the pieces and screw it together. This rifle would purely be for fun and shooting out to 1,500-2000 yards. Any suggestions on actions and chassis if I go that route? I don't think I can justify going the AI route. I do have an older AI AE MK3 and absolutely love that rifle, but 11K is more than I want to spend on this project. I would love to keep this in the 5K range for just the rifle.

If you're going for 2,000 yards, I'd recommend the 300-Norma. I have both 300-Norma and 300-PRC, and both are fine out to a mile, but going further will benefit from the added features of the Norma cartridge. I also have them in both chassis-based MPA rifles, as well as both barrel kits for my MRAD ... and they both shoot equally well. That said, if you've got the scratch to invest, the MRAD is my favorite rifle on the planet and one I'd highly recommend.

Never met anyone who regretted getting a MRAD or an AI. Builds sometimes require a little more acumen to get every thing working right. How much time and intellect do you want to spend trying to find the contour on the feed lips of the mag that works with your gun.

A terminus action in your preferred chassis would scratch that itch quite nicely.

I built a 300PRC on an Origin LA and PVA M24 profiled 26" barrel. It sits in an MDT chassis. The goal was also to make it as heavy as possible.

The PVA barrel is a laser and load development with 230gr ATips and Retumbo was super easy. With Virgin ADG brass I am getting an SD of 6 and just under 2800fps. There was a lot of room to push the 230 ATips faster, but it's shooting half MOA and the velocity is super consistent.

The chassis is great, except you will absolutely want a bridge of some kind to stiffen the forend up. Or find an alternative chassis. Again, I was striving for a 26lbs+ rifle when it was done.

An MRAD or AI are sweet options. At retail,y setup is just over $3K. You can parts hunt on the PX and definitely shave 20-30% off that retail cost.

I have a an MRAD with the 300NM, I love it! I have a DT in 300 PRC and love it. So you really can't go wrong. Do you want a switch barrel, go with the MRAD, or find a chassis you love and get the Terminus and go to town. It's all personal preference. I'm a quick amd dirty switch barrel guy so I normally run my MRAD or DT a lot. Hunting I stick with my custom rig that's balanced right and light

Answer: "None" ... that's why I bought my MRAD (and 4 barrel kits). Best investment I ever made since getting into the hobby. I actually wish I'd bought the MRAD "first", and I would have saved a lot by not buying single-caliber bolt action rifles. Live and learn.

Cruise through the px here. Can find some used items and get most bang for the buck

Otherwise if you want to pony up the $$

$8900 for brand new AXSR

Thanks for all the suggestions. I had someone message me about the MPA PRO 2 and went ahead and ordered one. Seems like a reasonable price for good components and still allows me to get a good used ATACR scope. Thanks again!
