Rebarrel Thoughts and Opinions

So I ordered a Outlier Barrel for black friday, $180 after tax and shipping, 1.25 full bull 6.5 Creed 1:7 twist. I got it for my Ruger American Predator to rebarrel cause the factory barrel heats up to fast. Well...so far not so good kind of. The factory barrel took some persuasion to get off but that's ok, but the rebarrel is where I could use some advice i guess. I headspaced it and everything fine but after its headspaced and torqued correct there is a Gap between the front of the barrel nut and the end of the barrel where the tenon begins. I contacted Outlier/Arken, same company, and they said the Gap is more cosmetic, which it is, but they also said the Gap does seem a bit to big. They also asked if I headspaced with or without the extractor/ejector installed. I told them I did it both ways and the Gap was about the same only .001 off if any. They have still not answered me back and all Arken/Outlier says is please be patient their Tech department is busy, which could be true. My theory is they chambered it correctly for 6.5 Creed but then cut the barrel and tenon threads for a long action caliber, but I'm just guessin. I guess I'll just wait and see.

Honestly, that's fucked-up- even for a budget barrel.
"Cosmetic" isn't accurate IMO.
Did they actually tell you they wouldn't accept a return/replacement?

I don't know the specs for the RA, but tenon specs don't vary in my experience from LA to SA. The difference in length is behind the bolthead, not in front of it. Far as I can tell, it's just a fucked-up barrel and they should replace it.

JMOYMMV

They didn't tell me no it's just they won't answer me at all. And yes, I agree that it should have some pride put into it budget barrel or not. Especially cause not on "sale" it's closer to $300 before shipping and tax. No excuse really. And the long action thing i mentioned was kind of how the savage has a large and small shank I didn't know if the RA has differences. But yeah pretty slow customer service, especially since Outlier never answered me only when I emailed Arken did somebody answer.

The finish alone on the barrel is a tell tale sign it is no good. They threaded the tenon waaaaay too long, simple as that. sure it is cosmetic but looks horrible. I would never let something like that leave my lathe.

I just did a Krieger bank and it's nice but the finish wasn't nice enough so I had to clean it up.

Just on the finish I would send that back.

Well based on all the reviews thats just their finish, the zipper sounding kind. Which it's a "budget" barrel so I guess it only gets 1 pass on the lathe. Less machining less cost i guess. I kind of guessed it would ve like that and was gonna try and mabye make it nicer, but now they r gettin on my nerves not answering me. So idk.

I think the issue there is the barrel diameter and the weird nut it necessitates. It looks like the barrel is a much larger diameter than the thread going into the action. This is different than most barrels that utilize a barrel nut, where the threaded tenon is the largest diameter of the barrel.

Unfortunately given the large barrel diameter and the nut configuration, at least a slight gap is inevitable. I don't think a replacement barrel will change anything.

I thought you had to have a gap by design with a barrel nut. It’s not shouldered and has to have extra space to set the shoulder. I think most just aren’t as heavy profile after the nut as this.

Yeah, barrel nut barrels always have a gap, but usually the barrel nut has a sleeve in front that after the barrel is torqued the sleeve covers any sort of gap. And there's isn't but should so either to much barrel was cut away or the tenon was cut wrong. There usually isn't a Visible gap.

It really doesn't matter as long as the barrel nut sleeve goes over the barrel gap and you usually don't see it.

Usually a barrel nut uses a barrel that’s the same outside shank diameter as the tenon threads major pitch. That way its a straight line and a nut can be easily made to fit.

The issue is compounded with your ruger American using a 1.1” barrel and you are using a 1.2” barrel. So it has to step up to a full diameter shoulder instead of just continuing straight forward from the threads.
It’s ugly but should work.
It’s also exactly what I would expect for a new chambered barrel being under 200 bucks.

For fucks sake they just sold a lot of barrels for cheap, you are not the only costumer. This is the most adult version of “my food is touching”

Go shoot it or wait for them to circle back and make you happy.

People want to spend outlier money to put on a Ruger American Predator them complain it’s not TacOps perfection with EuroOptic customer service.

Me, I’d shoot the fucker and make sure everything else is doing why it should but it should a like you would rather wait and delay the whole process.

Some of you never phucked the nice fat girl w the good personality and it shows.

Tragic.

FWIW outlier took care of me but I was patient. Oh and mine shoots great.

I would just shoot it, and at first they did get back to me the first day I contacted them. But they also said in the first email that the gap seemed to big and not in spec so that's y I didn't mess with it till they get back to me in case it was a QC issue...which is what u started out your post with, and that I read before even buyin the barrel, so thanks for the info. I knew what I was gettin into 😬 It's just they told me somethin may be out of spec to wait before I shoot it. So I sent them a short video of me headspacing it and they said today that it doesn't look like a headspace issue but rather a tenon length issue and for me to measure the tenon length and get back to them. All that is fine but u would think it wouldn't of left without that being in spec 🤷‍♂️. We'll see what they say. And also you seem a lil tense...Who hurt u 😉

The barrel nut has a big "sleeve" section to cover any gap, but thats y it's crazy how much gap there is. That it can't be covered with that much sleeve.

So, so far Outlier has said the same thing over and over, that they are trying to contact their supervisor and trying to come up wirh a solution. This morning the Supervisor said the headspace will work, which I knew it would, but they said that it looks like mabye the barrel nut shroud portion was cut to small. They r working on a solution. Hmm, that could definetly be it but when I asked them a couple weeks ago if mabye they sent me the wrong size barrel nut they said that was unlikely being that all their Barrel Nuts were the same depth and size regardless of the thread pattern. They had me measure the tenon length last week so there's really nothin else it could be if that was within their spec. So I'll just wait for their next response. If thats it then ok, but there is a whole lot of "sleeve" portion on their barrel nut not to cover the threads. The pic is the Ruger barrel nut vs Outlier.

I'd request a refund, return it and then buy a barrel elsewhere. If that's not an option, ask them to make a new nut with a slightly longer shroud to cover the gap.

I primarily use barrel nuts and barrels done by Southern Precision Rifles. I can use standard profiles up to a 1.25 straight contour because of how they designed their nut system. Pictured below is one of their barrel and nut on my Origin and the barrel is a heavy palma contour. From what I understand, they are phasing the nut system out. That saddens me.

Well the thing is Outlier keeps tip toe'n around the fact of return or replacement. I requested a new barrel nut if they think it was out of spec. U would think they would just replace the barrel in the begining and then they could of measured and checked the barrel specs and seen why or if somethin was off. I just rebarreled a Savage with a E.R.Shaw 26 inch 1.0 Full Bull and I had no problems what so ever. It was $345 after tax and shipping, which is around what the Outlier barrel would of been not on sale, and the Shaw barrel is leaps and bounds better quality then the Outlier. And the Shaw shoots great too.

Uh....yeah.
Ridiculous amount, actually. There's only a couple of variables. Receiver ring to boltface dimension, and chamber depth/casehead protrusion. A single thread/revolution of the barrel on a 20 tpi tenon is fifty thou- which is waaaayyy more than needed to account for those variables.

So here's a small update on Dec 16, 24 Outlier got back to me and said their Supervisior and Tech guy said it doesn't look like the tenon was cut out of spec but they both believe the Barrel Nut is to short or cut out of spec...which is the first thing I suggested but oh well. So now with them confirming it was nothing really affecting me shooting it just a "cosmetic thing". I cranked that barrel on after christmas and shot it. And of course the day after I put it on Arken, not Outlier, emailed me and told me they r making me a new barrel nut. But anyway, time and ammo were limited, and it rained like a mother. I wanted to see if the barrel would even shoot and was worth the time effort. So I only got a couple groups in, but that's all I needed...the barrel is a shooter. After 3 shots of cheap Win 125gr OTM to sight in I shot 5 Hornady 140 ELDM and they were horrible which didn't give me convidence. The only other ammo I had was a bunch of AAC 140gr Sierra BTHP, but it did really like those, which is good cause they r cheap. No handloads yet. So excuses, here's one, I only shot so little 1 for the rain and 2 cause halfway through the 10 shot group the 4th and 5th dropped waayyy low and then I realised. I had to remove alot of material to free float the barrel and there was a high spot when puttin pressure while using the bipod, so I shot it and let it "free recoil" without gripping it real hard for the the 2 top shots of the 5 shot group, thats y I measured it 3 then 5, and lightly grippin it for the next 3 round group. But decided to shoot another day when conditions were better but for the first rounds out the barrel, Not Bad.

I got to shoot the Outlier barrel again on 1-1-25, Happy New Year.
But last time I shot it the conditions weren't great, and I was at my backup range with plywood tables, it's mainly for sighting in for hunting aka not to stable. This time it was at my main range with concrete benches and 200 yards, but the wind was gusts of 15-20mph and it was 30 degrees. Oh well I couldn't wait. The barrel shot, well, Amazing! The only ammo I shot for groups through it was the factory AAC 140gr Sierra Matching which it loves. The Hornady American Gunner I have from years ago shot .96 so not great but under MOA, but the chrono results for the H AG was terrible almost 100fps ES. The groups were great all under half MOA even at 200 yards. I might handload for it later but really don't need to the way it shoots some factory ammo. Outlier also emailed me today saying they r making me a longer barrel nut to cover my gap in the barrel to reciever, but they did mention how they r real busy with the holidays so they r working hard to get it done. Which is fine cause I'm sure they r busy.

Assuming you own a pair of calibers couldn't you have just measured the dimensions of the barrel nut and given them to Outlier seeing as how they already told you all barrel nuts are the same size.

This sure seems like a lot of going around your ass to get to your elbow that could have been avoided.

Here's hopefully the last update regarding the barrel nut issue. Outlier emailed me and said they were making me a new barrel nut, then, 3 days later it arrived at my house.and as soon as I opened the package it was obvious the first barrel nut was WAY to small.
I rebarreled the rifle and it fits like, well, it was supposed to. So 6 weeks later they finally gave me what I suggested the first day of havin the barrel. And it wasn't about the busy holiday season it was really the fact that they tried all their troubleshooting stuff but i sent them the measurements of the tenon, the action, the whole barrel, and the barrel nut and they still thought I was headspacing it wrong. Only after I sent them a video of me headspacing it they finally just made me another barrel nut. But my next question is how that barrel nut got made that far off, it isn't off by .00 or .000 it's off by .200. In the machining world that seems to be alot. Here's some pictures of what the difference is u can decide what u want about the company. Their barrel does shoot great but IDK about the rest of company. I still like Arken though. :)

Here's the email I just got on what the problem was. So it sounds like they wanted to use the smaller tenon of the Tikka and smaller barrel nut...to save materials i guess. How could they sell the barrel without fitting it into a Ruger American action during testing and seeing the small gap i had and still sell it? If they wanted to use the shorter tenon to save barrel material or somethin they still could, but just send out long barrel nuts with Ruger and small with Tikka. It seems like they want to only make 1 barrel nut size, which is the smaller one with less material used for it, for 2 types of actions with the same thread, I dont know. Oh well. :)

My outlier 6cm fits well. And shoots great.

It’s really heavy and it will likely never go anywhere but the range.

It is basically exactly what I’d expect for the cost, plus a little value for being accurate.
