ABSCAM was a sting operation conducted by the FBI in the late 1970s and early 1980s to investigate public corruption and organized crime. The operation involved undercover agents posing as wealthy Arabs with suitcases full of cash, attempting to bribe public officials. The operation led to the convictions of several people, including:
  • A US senator
  • Six congressmen
  • Three Philadelphia City Council members
  • The mayor of Camden, New Jersey
The operation began in July 1978 and ended in 1980. The world learned of the operation on February 2, 1980
