Tikka action vs. Zematt Origin action

Here's two main things you may want to consider,
that don't simply revolve around $ Cost.

Tikka will let you function with 3.4in COAL vs 2.96in of r700 builds, which is
better for quasi-ELR use, loading heavies etc, due to the longer magwell.

True short actions like r700 are better for pure PRS/Gamer builds...
since they balance closer to the shooter's body becaus of the shorter magwell.

The use case IMHO is critical to spell out.

Just my $0.02c

my opinion would be the origin action. It looks like they come in a medium and that would be perfect for 300wsm. You get an action with tighter tolerance. You also don’t have to dick around with getting the factory barrel off the Tik. Tikka’s are great, but you’re still just bound to a factory action that is hard to get parts for. Plus… with Remmy 700’s there’s more options for aftermarket

In 300 WSM, I would do an Origin medium action for the added length of heavy bullets. The medium takes away the only real benefit that a Tikka would offer (unless you just have to have the 70° bolt throw).

What is your use case? If purely hunting just buy a Tikka in 300 wsm they normally shoot lights out if you want a range gun I'd build an origin. You can single feed long if you really want to.

That also removes the #1 benefit of the 700 footprint, which is being able to use about any stock or chassis your heart desires.

You already have a 6.5 PRC in a TL3. You want to build a 300 WSM. Dimensionally both cartridges are very similar. You already know what your parameters are. What do you think the pros and cons are?

I have both and would not do the Origin again. Especially for 300wsm. Stainless Tikka is a nobrainer option IMO for that medium-esque cartridge length.

Origin minimum cost = $900
Origin comes with a pinned rail

Tikka minimum (Stainless) = ~ $750
Tikka comes with good trigger, integral rail, and usable bottom metal+magazine

Sell the barrel and stock for maybe 150 bucks. You're ahead by like $400 just in parts

I was thinking that I may be able to cut cost down and put that savings into the glass. But I’m finding out it’s only a little bit cheaper, and I really like my TL3 by zermatt (Formally Bighorn). And the Origin is cheaper than TL3. I realize I still need bottom metal and trigger. Thanks for your input!

Origin.

I run a 300 wsm on a SA Origin.
Shoot 200 gr bullets.

2816 FPS and SD of 7.1 over 45 rds once a load was settled on.

Very accurate rifle.

8 lb hunter

I have tikkas too.
For this rifle/purpose, I love the Origin and EH1 combo.
Did you go with a 10:1 on your barrel or did you go with a little faster twist with the heavier bullet?
What barrel did you go with?

As plenty of others have mentioned, you have limited aftermarket support with a Tikka. They're great production rifles, but it's difficult for me to want to put money into one.

Let's say you get a few years down the road and want to swap some parts out or even grow out of the action. The used market for Tikka sucks, and if you want to go with a higher end action, you're stuck buying a whole new rifle essentially. With any 700 footprint, you buy a new action and have a new barrel spun and you get to use the rest of the components you've been shooting with the whole time. Resale for the 700 footprint is also way better and easier.

Origin is the easy button here. The 700 pattern is by far more versatile when it comes to triggers, stocks, etc. Support (if needed) from Zermatt Arms is the gold standard. Tikka isn't. If you're LEO/MIL/First Responder, reach out to Paul @ Evolved Ballistics. He'll give you a discount. I'm not affiliated, just a super happy customer.

I prefer the Tikka action for a hunting rifle because the safety locks the bolt and they are very reliable in standard cartridges. One thing to keep in mind with Tikkas chambered in body positive cartridges like the WSMs and 7 PRC is that they tend to eject at a high enough angle that if you are running a scope with a large windage knob relatively low, it can cause ejection problems where the round bounces off the knob and kicks back into the chamber. I've been through a handful of ring sets at this point trying to find the lowest rings that don't have this issue on my 300 WSM turned 7 PRC, but I'm probably going to have to modify the stock for a good cheek weld and go with highs.

Paul is who I ordered my .25 CM Proof CF barrel from, and had him send it to Eric at Blue Mountain Precision to thread and chamber it for my Solus. 2 good folks right there. Solid work.
