Honey Badger .300 Blackout, Trash Panda can, Sub-Sonic Copper rounds that open quick with nasty copper blades. Quiet, lots of ammo, fast and light, blinding flashlight, zero recoil. Train 3 to the torso, then head shots. There's only going to be one side to the story.

12 ga and I have no idea why people keep recommending #00 buck shot...your ain't hunting deer and this load gives you 9 each large (about .38 cal) pellets.

Personally, I'd go with BB's....even #2's.

Everyone keeps talking about "over penetration" like it's a bad thing. I have the only bedroom downstairs. If you kick in my front door, I'm sending them through 3 walls into your guts. You won't even know where it's coming from when you and the crew start leaking all over the dining room. I'm sending solids right through the drywall and Framing..

Pick a gun you can handle while your ears are ringing like crazy. If you were awakened by intruders in the middle of the night, it is likely that you did not have time to put in ear protection. And sound will bounce from everywhere, too.

For the most part, rifles aside, my EDC is the handiest home defense weapon. 4.25 inch barrel, 17 rd mag of 9 mm. I keep one in the pipe, so that is 16 in the mag.

It is always within reach or on my person. As well as two more loaded 17 rd mags.

But there is nothing wrong with shotties, either. I get the advantage of using shot, creating a number of holes. I also like my slugs. They make huge and gaping holes that simply do not close back up. Get a crook in the femoral artery with one of those and an ambulance is not needed but a coroner wagon will be needed.

I use slug and buckshot PDX1 but anything down the barrel even the target loads in 71/2 2 3/4 dram loads will fuck up anybody in the way.

When the adrenaline is pumping you won't have a problem with the noise. You will still be deaf when the adrenaline rush ends and the ringing doesn't

105 howitzer with a beehive round aimed at front door......done

I don't want to overdo it with a 155 howitzer, that would be a bit overkill.

Doc
Maginot line?
My house is rigged with explosives so if anyone opens the doors or windows the hole thing goes kaboom. I sleep outside. Keep several changes of clothes in the car. And only eat gas station food. Now that I mention it I wonder if I left the cat enough food....

Best weapons for home defense in reality:

1. A job - to pay property taxes so .gov doesn't steal it.
2. A 2nd job - to pay utilities so corp america doesn't turn them off.
3. A condom - so kids don't destroy it.
4. A good attorney - so the ex doesn't take it.
5. A good warning sign - "This house protected by a horny gay man with AIDS."
6. A son named Kevin - that you leave behind for family vacations.
7. A good weapon - pink Glock 19 so you can mock them after they're dead.

Caliber is almost irrelevant.
Bright floods on the outside, dark on the inside, screaming alarm, sleeping dogs, master light panel in your bed room. Perps enter with no night vision, all lights go off when they break in, blind, deafened by screaming alarm, get attacked by dogs, don’t know the layout… Set the battlefield for victory. .380 is plenty under those conditions. 2:30 in the morning and outnumbered is not a great time to improvise, trust to luck, or rely on a caliber. Make it hard for you to loose, and hard for them to win. It’s your house and you can make it really hard for an intruder to fight in it. What weapon is in your Hand may be the least relevant question.

Once they are disoriented, blind and confused... that isn't the time to shoot them anyway...

It's the time to snare them, then break out the tractor bucket forks, the leg irons and the deer-cleaning hooks...

From there on, use your imagination.

All to the sound-track of "It's a Small World" and the Barney Theme song.

I mean... the "smart" ones don't even carry their cell phones, so noone knows where they are anyway. So think of them as a canvas for your artwork of deterrence. (Oh, you can probably put about 40 CB caps into someone before they bleed out... learned that one from Gordon Liddy.)

A 45 Super can do everything a 10mm does.
I know we’re just havin’ fun at this point, but ironically that’s the load I keep in my nightstand gun. Hard casts are when I have this gun on me while camping in cougar or black bear country:

Loaded in this mag, so I know to confirm the heavier recoil spring is installed when I grab it:

…and that pistol always has a can attached of course:
