How do the older Leupold Vari-X III scopes from the 90's compare to what's made today? I have a Vari-X III in 3.5-10 and a 6.5-20 with Duplex reticles that aren't getting used much and thinking about an upgrade. Not sure how desireable these are today.
Thanks.

I wouldn’t waste my money on one unless it was going on a classic rifle to keep with the period-correct look, and would put that money towards buying something exponentially better.

You'll be surprised what they'll bring on ebay. Do a long auction starting at a penny with no reserve. The optics are ok, but the tracking will be the issue.

Hi everyone. I had luck to get my hands on one beautiful, almost mint condition Leupold VARI-X III 4.5 14 TACTICAL with Adjustable Objective, Duplex reticle, 40mm objective, 1” tube and high turrets.
I need information how much ravel (horizontal and vertical) this scope has? What is total amount in MOA because it seems that scope has 1/4 MOA clicks.
Thanks a lot for your precious knowledge.

Every 4 clicks is 1moa. Count the clicks and divide by 4....

Cynics will probably roll their eyes at me for saying this, but a comparison I did out of my dining room window at 2 cellphone towers 3,300 yards away (on google earth) between these scopes had my Leupold LRP 6-20x come out with the best glass.

Burris Match Pro ED 5-30x
Arken EP5 7-35
Arken EP4 6-24
Vortex LHT 4.5-22 (what I would put my money on)
Leupold LRP 6-20

The Leupold glass destroyed everything else, including the Vortex LHT.

And I hate Leupold's because they don't track. But I never would've thought it would out-glass the LHT.

If it's old and doesn't track send it in. They will rebuild it. Generally it's just dried up grease and weak springs.
You'll get it back with fresh grease, fresh springs, clean glass, and new nitrogen.

I’ve had a lot of luck with Leupold service. Had a scope shipped to me that partially broke through the box and had a ton of grind marks on the turrets and a dent in the bell. Told them what happened and that it was 100% not on them, but that I’d happily pay for repairs. They fully cleaned, straightened the dent, and replaced the turrets, then verified tracking. All for just the shipping cost of me sending it in.
