My oldest son is moving into an apartment complex in Fort Collins. I’m looking for ideas for a compact upright gun storage cabinet.

I’m afraid with him having to transport firearms between his vehicle & an apartment on the 3rd floor it might attract unwanted attention, regardless of if he just carries one or carries it in a case.

He’ll take a few long guns & a few handguns along with a couple silencers. I understand it won’t be secure like Fort Knox but something that’ll help keep them out of sight & deter theft.

Check out SecureIt. Easy enough to move since your talking about an apartment.

Great solution - I have one of these and it’s awesome. It is easy to set up and very flexible to organize. No having to move 3 guns to get to the one you want. It provides solid security / deterrent for my needs and would work well in your apartment scenario.

    You're not wrong.

Most of that unwanted attention will be petrified townies calling 911 to make a false report and be the next ERPO Fraud test case (literally had the first one right here in NOCO when that first got passed), but yeah, Fort Collins is still experiencing an outdoor living enthusiast renaissance and there will be unwanted eyes about, especially in an apartment complex.

In addition to literally anything with a lock and lightweight enough to get up the stairs (just use a handful of deck screws and construction lumber to clear the baseboard trim as offsets to screw the cabinet into the studs and pay the damage fee upon moveout if the place isn't cool with patched holes), some type of doorbell camera system (the whole Aurora TDA video is kinda in the local psyche), get him a used backpacking rucksack from REI. Any of the larger packs will get you 30"ish inches of length on the inside, he might have to pull some takedown pins, go to folding stocks/chassis, etc - but he'll be effectively invisible. Shove some Nalgenes in the side pockets for extra effect.

Failing that, things like hockey bags and lacrosse bags with sportsy logos are similarly invisible.

3rd for the SecureIt. Have one as well and does what it needs to do.

Get them into the apt in cardboard boxes, not the ones they came in with labels, etc. No stickers on car, "gray man" clothing, don't tell a freaking soul that he has them, regardless-everyone talks. Anything than can be in a simple gym bag, pistols, AR's separated, etc. ANy bolt guns-go to chassis with folders and use the already mentioned lacrosse, tennis, gym bags, etc. All range gear in bags or boxes that doesn't indicate gun stuff. There's no "discreet" gun bags, I would avoid the guitar cases-that will spur conversation more than a plain gym bag.
Again-do not let any neighbors know a thing--sucks but nobody needs to know.
Another thing is watch deliveries-it may go into a parcel box or the driver may want to have someone sign for it-which may include the staff on site.

One more thing-those 72"x36-48" w x 18" deep metal cabinets may be a good thing to put the above safe into so the Apt staff doesn't see the safe.

I appreciate all of the input.

It’s definitely a different lifestyle living in a big city, something we know nothing about, but he’s fixing to learn about.

Keep up the recommendations & I’ll keep him informed.

I travel a ton and basically live in hotels. Best thing I've found is the Elberlestock lowdrag to move rifles in and out to the range.
Nothing like having people ask awkward questions in elevators. Never had that issue with my low drag. And overall it's an awesome backpack, even has a laptop sleeve lol.
