Hide,

My dad recently purchased a Walther PDP, 5 inch, compact and was hoping to run a Safariland ALS without a light. It looks like Safariland doesn’t make an ALS for that model without a light. I reached out to RDR gear as I know they make some minor Safariland mods, but haven’t heard back.

My concern would be sloppiness or issues if the holster indexes off the light. He is running a red dot.

Would love any ideas.

Thanks!!

While not for the pdp but I just recently bought a als for a Glock 17 it’s for a light and rmr but I’m not running a light but there is no sloppiness as it indexes off the barrel, I did have to put in a different block for the barrel because I’m running a threaded barrel.

G-Code may have a similar holster without a light that can use their RTI system.
I have had to break them in to get the draw smoothed out with G19 with and without light as well as with the retention holster.
RMR cuts available for additional $5.

Your pistol will not index or be retained properly if you do not use a light for a light intended safariland holster. It will go in and feel retained if you get it just right but absolutely not the way it’s supposed to be. Your best bet if you really want that holster which I don’t blame you is to add a light. Rdr gear is great for sure and I’ve used them but there reply sometimes can be extremely slow or no reply at all.

The problem with a Safariland ALS will be the red dot. You can get a GLS for it. Instead of a thumb release button, it releases via a lever actuated by the middle finger as you get a grip. I prefer the ALS, but the GLS works pretty well too.

Safariland 6000 series holsters retain the weapon by the light. The 7000 series retain the weapon independent of the light.

Put another way, the 6000 series for a weapon mounted light needs the light to work. The 7000 series does not.

With or without a light? Open or hooded holster?

I only have 3 or 4 ALS holsters, and none are set up for a light, or a hood for the RMR.

The ALS mechanism appears to index on the slide at the ejection port. The lever for this mechanism runs along the length of the slide nearly to the rear sight. This does not leave room for a RMR. Perhaps Safariland has a couple of different methods of employing the ALS mechanism?

The GLS mechanism indexes on the trigger guard, allowing for the holster to be open where a red dot sits. Though, dremelling out a bit was still required for my RMR equipped 2011 clone.

Looking through Safariland’s holster finder, if you want the ALS model holster for a pistol without a light, you don’t have the option for a RMR.

The Safariland GLS (Grip Lock ingSystem engages the trigger guard) works well with PDP.
One can use the paddle, QLS or their new Ultra Concealable belt attachments.

As mentioned above, the ALS (Automatic Locking System) mechanism engages the back edge of the slide-breech area.
