Acquired a cool 1903 with competition redfield iron peep sights.

Shoots really good, getting 1 inch groups at 100 yards with the iron peep sights.

Unfortunately, the stock is a homemade laminate with a large oversized forend with a square bottom that is made for benchrest and does not fit me. Actually rather uncomfortable to shoot and I am a offhand 4 position shooter in which benchrest is used to check ammo and then back to the skillset I prefer, both competition and hunting.

Going to start hacking away on the stock and cutting it down, customizing it to my measurements but would like to know if the Boyd's replacement is something I should consider before starting the project.

leaning towards the non thumbhole stock, primarily for strength. and durability.

Anybody have any advice and recommendations?

Thank you very much and you have a great day.

Regards,

Outside of having always wanted one, I know very little about 03’s.
But there are some guys that hang out in the vintage section that know volumes.
Might check over there…..

I have quite a few Boyd’s stock, but not on my 1903. I really like the Boyd’s stock I purchased. A couple I’ve bedded, most I haven’t. All shoot well. The only fitting I’ve ever had to do is opening up the barrel channel to fit an over sized barrel.

There are many great old stocks for that rifle . Fajen is just one but if you are OK with pre-owned the choices are many . This is just one example, not all that fancy or pretty but gives you an idea of what a Fajen looks like . I have an old Fajen in birds eye maple that is a work of art . No checkering on mine , which I prefer .
