6.5x284 velocities

Hello all.
Wondering if anyone can give me some advice on velocity.

I am shooting a Sako 75 chambered in 6.5x284. It was a factory 6.5x55 Swede 1:8 twist 24” varmint barrel and was rechambered to 6.5x284.

I have tried various loads, most recently 57 and 58 grains of retumbo, shooting an 140gr Eld-m and the best velocities I am generating are around 2770.

From everything I have read I should be getting closer to the 2900-2950 range?

Any ideas?

Should I re barrel and try a 26” or perhaps move it on and start again with a 6.5prc?

Cheers

I don't know...this chart shows quite a lot less powder but none are Retumbo. Velocities are right around 2700 fps. When you filter using Retumbo as the powder, the 6.5x284 does not even show up.

For what it's worth, I get 3250 fps with Berger 140 Hunting VLD with a 280 Ackley and a 26" barrel. Super accurate. I'd have to go check the notes but I am pretty sure I am using H4350.

Retumbo might be too slow for a 140 grain.
I'we got a 6,5 -284 too and are using Reload Swiss RS 70 for most of my loads, but i'm aware it might be hard to find in AUS.

So, instead i would look for Vithavouri 165 or Reloader 22 and a magnum primer for a better result.
And, be careful, as with all flat-shouldered cartridges, the 6,5 - 284 is very prone to carbon build-up, the one of mine, needs cleaning after every 150 rounds.
