I currently have a Nightforce ATACR 1-8 and I am having a problem with adjusting the diopter. I adjusted the diopter on 1X by focusing on some trees about 25 yards away. I got the image pretty flat and could see a crisp dot and circle when the reticle was illuminated. The problem that I have is when zoom up to 8X the image is not crisp as would like. When I adjust the diopter on 8X and get the image crisp, I loose my flatness on one power. I compared the ATACR image on 5X with my Eotech with a 5x magnifier and the Eotech was clear and brighter. How do I get the image flat on 1X and crisp at 8X? Is there a problem with my ATACR? Been fooling around with this way too long.

This is just an unfortunate LPVO thing. You can't have it perfect at both ends of a wide spectrum. 1-4x's are pretty much immune but 1-6x's have it, 8x is worse and 10x is worse than that.

I assume it's actually present in all variable optics, but no one is trying to adjust the diopter on a 5-25x for perfect both eyes open viewing at 5x and crisp image at 25x, because that's not a thing at 5x.

Your issue likely stems from how you're adjusting the diopter. For proper setup, focus on the reticle—not the target—on a plain background (like the sky) at 1X. Once the reticle is sharp, leave the diopter alone and adjust the parallax (if available) or accept that the image may not perfectly match other optics like your Eotech. If the problem persists, it could be a manufacturing defect, and you may need to contact Nightforce for support.

ATACR is always going to have magnification at 1x. It's not true unity if you want your higher mag to be decent.

Somewhat, but some are worse than others MK6 1-6 was excellent, K16i was very good, VCOG 1-6 was absolutely nausea inducing, ATACR isn't bad but you have to accept 1.1x on the low end. NX8 is excellent but you have to accept a bit of fish-eye on the bottom end. Of all of them, the MK6 1-6 was my favorite, optically. Illumination and reticle just needed love. NX8 is 90% the MK6 optically, and fixes the other issues.
