I’m looking for a set of higher powered binos for PRS spotting. I’m trying to stay around 2k on budget. I know the 14’s pures are the best but it’s not in the budget. Between these binos what would you choose?

The swaros and meoptas will probably have the best glass. The mavens have pretty good glass though and the reticle feature can be quite useful. The Zeiss would also be a great choice and the glass should be very good

Not sure what the market is right now, but a couple years ago you could find the Meoptas used here or on Rokslide for 1100-1200 regularly. They’re pretty killer at that price.

I got to play with some Zeiss 15x last season at a match and the glass was awesome (no reticle). The swaro nl pure glass is outstanding, but never played with the slc. Apex summit pro 2 15’s with reticle are really good glass with reticle as well.

An even cheaper option is the Athlon Midas pro 12x50 with a reticle. I've bought some or 22lr, glass isn't amazing but they do the trick and only around $400.

I think the reticle is nice for milling targets and calling shots (not that you do this often). If you don't think you' see any value in measuring targets then I don't think you really need a reticle.

If you wear eye protection or prescription glasses, I'd encourage you to go in to a retail store where you can look through any binocular over 10x or so that you're considering: it's commonplace for higher magnification binoculars to have significantly less eye relief than lower magnification binoculars, and if you wear glasses, you may go from "Marginal" to "Unusable" once you jump above 10x.

Same story for inter pupilary distance (IPD) - the higher the magnification, the more common it is to see wider and wider minimum IPD. If you rolled unlucky genetic dice and your eyeballs are just a little closer together than the norm, stuff over 10x can be a no-hoper.

If you can use them comfortably, I'd say go for it. Any of the ones you list seem like they'd be great.

Are these going to be your first binos, or are you getting your forever binos? I've been using Athlon Cronus 15x56 for the last six years, and they work pretty well. Of all the PRS gear that needs updating, binos and my tripod were some of the last to get upgraded, as other gear tended to yield better scores. There a are a lot of great binos for PRS that are cheaper that $2k - Athlon, Apex, Bushnell, Maven, etc. I know a lot of guys who spot with their 10x Rangefinding binos pretty well, even.

If you're looking for forever binos for PRS, I'd personally be looking at something with a reticle. It's nice to know how much people are missing by, or knowing how many MOA/MRAD tall/wide a target is when it's one of those dimensionless Sasquatch/Bear/Coyote targets, etc.
  • Maven 18x56 B.5 with a reticle ($1700)
  • ZEISS Conquest HDX LRP 15x56 ($1999)

Good question I have everything else pretty much upgraded where I want. My current binos I have are vortex furry ab so a decent pair of higher powered binoculars is about all I’m missing. I don’t compete a ton but do like decent gear. I’m leaning towards the swaro or Zeiss due buy once cry once theory just figured I would ask others opinion before making a choice.

This is good advice. As much as I love my Vector X’s … I’ve been debating selling them to invest into other areas where I need it more. I think I could “downgrade” binos and be better off with extra cash for more components, etc.

I have the Bushnell Match Pro ED with the reticle that I picked up used from here and they have done everything that I needed. They are good enough that I have often watched infuse rounds all the way into the target at longer ranges. I use the reticle to help with my starting wind calls

The bushnells are incredible for the money. To my eyes they looked better than razor UHD 12x’s

You can easily see trace and the eye relief is really good.

I’d buy the bushnell or buy the highest end of your budget. I don’t think you’re gaining much in between.

Do they feel ok/natural to use in hand, or do you really want them mounted and stationary?

A few thoughts.
  • The inter-pupilary distance can be a thing, for sure. I've always needed to have binocular barrels set as close together as possible. I've noticed that I have to position my eyes perfectly with a buddy's Swaro SLC 15x and my new Meopta MeoStar 15x bought during @gr8fuldoug 's sale around Thanksgiving.
  • I have compared the Swaro SLC, Meopta MeoStar and Bushnell Match Pro (all 15x) in actual match use. The Swaros are just freaking amazing (and most expensive). Meopta MeoStar also excellent - feel heavier. The Bushnell Match Pros hold their own very well against the more expensive glass - easily the best value based on price.
  • So why did I go with the Meoptas? Three reasons. First, Bushnell has a spotty (at best) record of customer service. Second, I've dealt with Doug at CameraLand a number of times, and am confident that he would be of immediate assistance if I had a service issue. Third, the Meoptas were open-box like-new binos at a substantial savings and were available when I wanted to buy.
  • I was disappointed to learn after my purchase that Meopta does not have a repair "presence" in USA (but is reportedly planning one). I am also a little disappointed to learn via earlier post in this thread that Meopta has been bought out by a US investment group. NEVER a Good Thing, in my experience... such entities don't give a flying damn about a company's heritage, product quality, or customer service; they only care about $$$$. Customer service is the first thing to go, followed by quality.
If I had it all to do over again, I'd go with the Bushnell Match Pro. I'm satisfied with the Meoptas, but the additional confidence I thought I was getting wrt service backing may not be what I thought. Hopefully I won't need to find out.
