I just got my rebarreled 37XC back and took it out for some barrel break in/speed up. With Berger 410s being late in coming, I've got to pick a round to load develop with. One of my main considerations is finding a bullet with sufficient expansion to enable visible splash for misses and target movement on impacts past 2500 yards.

In my last barrel I used Lehigh 353s and they were abysmal in this regard. I've got a fair number of A-Tips, but I'm not sure about them.

Now, I'm looking at the Cutting Edge tipped bullets and am posting to see if anyone who's used them could comment on their terminal performance.

FWIW: My experience with Cutting Edge Lazer tipped solid bullets is limited to .300NM at 1,760 yards.
The Lazers left a "pinprick" visual on painted steel at one mile. Very difficult to spot impacts...had to rely on plate movement to confirm hit.
By comparison, 250 A-Tips and Berger 245 LRHTs registered highly visible splatter marks on the plate.
I have a new 33XC and have loaded up 300 Bergers and 300 A-Tips to evaulate.

I ran entire 1:8 barrel with ATips so you should be good there. Only problem you are going to have is if it is throated for solids.

To answer your original question a solid is much for difficult to spot at distance and almost impossible to see where you hit on a plate starting about 2000 yards.

We recovered some solids at the base of a 2300y plate last year. They were only mildly (a relative term) deformed by impact, which was at an extreme angle.

These were recovered a couple of years ago from near a 2250-yard target:

Interesting. Here are some .338 Badlands 285gr solids we recovered from a standard 338LM at 1626 yds. NOT 2250, of course, but it’s “only” a 338LM, Light-Class gun:

And yes, the splash still sucked and they shot like crap compared to the 300gr Berger and Lapua Scenar.

Sounds like the Lehighs didn’t give you the performance you were hoping for in terms of splash. They are known for being very solid, but they’re designed more for deep penetration and stability at extreme distances, which sometimes doesn’t result in the kind of splash or target movement you want for feedback. Definitely a case of prioritizing performance over visible impact, but not always ideal for spotting hits.
