Rifle Competition Events First Mammoth sniper challenge in march

Hello all. I’m gearing up for my first mammoth at Ft. Chaffe in march. Any tips, tricks, pointers for a first timer?

Right now I’m training heavy in cardio and leg workouts, rucking multiple miles per week with 57lbs and doing so no matter what the weather is like.

My gear is pretty much complete, minus a tent. I haven’t decided what route I want to go.

Do not Ruck multiple times a week. Look at a ruck plan where you’ll progressively increase distance. Overtraining is real and you’ll injure yourself if you dont do it smartly.
 
Good luck man, I competed at the Ft Chaffee one last year and had a blast

Toughness of your feet is more important than strength and endurance, at least in my experience. Make sure your boots are big enough to allow your feet to swell without getting chewed up. I wore Goruck boots, and I wish I had worn some thicker boots or something with a rock plate. Some of those roads at Chaffee are paved with super coarse gravel, so on day 2 or so I started getting a little tenderfooted.

Pack earplugs for the campsite, trust me.

Don't skimp on food, pack twice as many calories as you need on a normal day. Bring electrolyte packets or salt tabs, whatever you like best. I saw lots of heat injuries and cramps last year, so prepare accordingly. Sometimes you don't have a lot of time to prepare food between stages and movements, so make sure you can get your food make and eaten in a hurry. Pack wipes, the porta-shitters may not have any paper.

As for the shooting part, your first time is going to hurt no matter how well you prepare. Mammoth is just special like that. Be cool and friendly to everybody, and don't ever get mad at the RO's. Pay extremely close attention to the stage briefs, take notes or use a voice recorder if needed.

If you feel comfortable with the weight and you are rucking paved roads just make sure your feet are good. The trails at Chaffee have a lot of rocks on them so make sure your ankles are getting worked in your workouts as well as you have your foot program squared away (i.e. its not flat). 16:00 is not bad at all there if you are prepped. Don't worry about what the pack is doing, run it for your time. That goes both ways, don't fall in behind someone without validating what pace you are going. As already said, don't skimp on food, but also don't skimp on electrolytes / snacks. You are going to be drinking a lot of water, make sure you are intaking things with that water.

Also, make sure your pack is squared away. Do checks with your teammate before and during the ruck. We saw far too many people stressing about time because they had to stop to re-arrange a rifle. Getting your body squared away is good, but if your gear turns into a yard sale you are going to end up having to run to make up that time.

Looks like you’re on the right path. Don’t bring anything you haven’t tried several times. The mammoth is not the place to find out something doesn’t work.

Endurance training is great, but keeping your feet healthy is probably more important. I did a ton of rucking over the fall and have reduced for the winter. I do lots of treadmill time both with and without ruck weight. I’ll go back to outdoor after this next cold spell.

Keep it simple, take care of your feet, bring enough food, and go shoot PRS/NRL. This will get you a ways.
