California residents paid nearly $600 milllion billion in federal taxes in 2022 while receiving only ~$110 million billion in federal money. Only Texas and NY are even in the ballpark regarding how much money they contribute to the fed gov via income tax.

That might work - throw in LA (and keep it) and it would be a conservative state again. After all, there are more republicans in California than CO, KS, NB, OK, IA, ID, SD and some other states combined. Just an overwhelming concentration of D in cities.
