Sako TRG Damaged Threads? Or not?

Picked up a used TRG in .338. Tried screwing the thread protector on but no dice. Looks like they might be damaged? Rifle had a self timing muzzle break on it before- poor installation? Or am I just crazy. Or are the threads fine? Not sure why the protector seems like it is too small. What are my options?

I should add that this is a 42A1. I confirmed that the thread protector is a TRG one- but not correct for this particular rifle. Cant seem to find a consistent answer on thread pitch for 42A1

Both the TRG 22 and 42 A1 are supposed to be 5/8x24 now. I have a 22A1 back at the house I can verify with...admittedly I've been running my 22A1's barrel just like I like my women - bare.

The older TRGs and AI's ran an M18x1 metric thread. I'm pretty sure you can still occasionally find some M18x1 barrels for AIs here in the states.

I'm going to agree with the guys above about the mismatched thread pitch. I have an old 5/8x24 protector laying around if you want me to send it to you to try.

Just please don't force anything :D .

I would appreciate that! Believe my threads are M18x1- at least the Sako website says the .338 lapua version is M18x1 while everything else is 5/8x24. Took me awhile to find this information!

Crap, I missed the .338 Lapua in the original post.

Yes, you are M18x1, and I think it has been that way from the beginning.

If you still want the 5/8x24 thread protector to see, I can still get it to you.

Those threads look fine.

These are damaged threads!

That was the original barrel on my 5.56 RPR. Ruger cross-threaded the muzzle brake.

I stopped screwing with it and took it back to my LGS. They got it off and this was the result. They sent it to Ruger, and I had it back in a week. It's been my most accurate rifle since.
