Precision Rifle Gear Ball head size.

For NRL, there’s no excuse to not have an RRS anvil. It’s the best for shooting off of, hands down. For PRS, wherein 99% of tripod use is spotting, a ball head is way easier for one handed operation and tracking across mostly-same-elevation targets. Doesn’t matter on the size except 55 will be more stable and lend a more solid feel to the whole operation.

I was thinking about this one. Seems like a bigger anvil with a lot of usable angle. And cheaper.

I have looked at and used a similar setup. Not a leofoto but similar. Not too bad and I’d be curious to try it but I will say this: compared to an anvil style head, that is going to be hugely heavy if weight is a concern. And the problem for me goes back to the single handed use for PRS. Setting a ball head to pan across the range without needing a hand to hold it is really nice. You can be holding your kestrel and panning your binos and not need another hand to tighten the head if you want to let go. I couldn’t get excited about this head for that reason.

?

You could do that no problem with that Leophoto head. It’s just a ballhead, like a RRS BH-55, only upside down with some of the structure cut away. Plus it has an adjustable panning base that’s independent of the ballhead movements.

The Anvil is just an upside down ballhead with just one tension control, the lever, instead of two tension controls in the Leophoto.

With either head, you just set the tension to the point where it holds the weight but is still able to move. 🤷‍♂️

I have 2 ANVILs and 2 BH-55, one of which I upgraded to the new clamp that the ARCA uses. I have used the BH-55 for years in photography so I am very comfortable with its use. The independent pan on the bullhead is nice for sure but there is something to be said for just having 1 tension control.

I am still getting used to ANVIL controls but I like the placement of the lever and how you use/activate it versus spinning the knob on a ballhead. The ANVIL is also easier to visually see the placement of the tension vs the knob. The ballhead also adds a decent amount of height over an ANVIL, so that is something to consider as well.

I have or have used the Anvil, BH-55, and MH-50. All can be used for any purpose, but I’ve settled on the Anvil for mounting a rifle, and the ballheads for spotter/binocular attachment.

The independent panning feature of the ballheads is great for optics. And while not necessary for match use, the ball heads, especially the MH-50, allow huge angles of articulation.
