Precision Rifle Gear Are 147’s still blowing up?

Just ordered a 6CM prefit with 18" length and 1:7 twist with shooting 108 ELD-Ms in mind for hunting. Should I be worried?
No it’s shorter you can increase twist if you decrease velocity so shorter barrels with more twist can work

Plus no real issue with 6mm unless you scream them fast.

Ok what was velocity
Twist and barrel condition?
I said anything can fail but reports are often exaggerated
I had several “blow up” on me. 50-100 yd out like he said. 2 very experienced buddies both watched it happen. One through the spotting scope. This was 2020ish. It happened on 2-3 separate times. I switched to Berger 156gr so can’t speak for them in years. I called Hornady and the rep acted like he had never heard of this happening. That was bullshit because it was all over the internet.
Proof CF 24” 1:8
I didn’t record environmental data

Those are a bit slow Rob. The guy I saw blowing up factory 108s out of a 7 twist ( last year at pigg river) was running around 3100 I think. I know he switched to norma and it stopped.

It’s where the factory ammo shoots. Shot about there in a few barrels I have shot it in over the past few years. I think the fastest was about 3050fps in one lot. Maybe he had an 28” barrel.

Also you know speed isn’t everything in matches. Most guys are slowing down their bullets for less recoil. I load my 110 ATips at 2900fps. I wouldn’t want to run them near 3100fps anyways. Nothing really gained.

Yea 100%. I know guys running 115s at like 3175. And they are the ones who typically have gun issues. I always try to run my stuff about middle of the range.

Unfortunately when I run slow with Berger 109 and H4350 my groups open and sd shoots up. I have ran them from 2720 to 3k. 2940 is the sweet spot after burning up a few barrels.

People should run cartridges that are appropriate for what speed they want...not the other way around. If I want to run 2800, I would shoot a BR or dasher and if I wanted to run 3100 it would be a creed or xc.

Part of the issue may be hornady changing powder lots. Some being much hotter and temp sensitive especially during and after covid. Hornady match used to shoot great. Now it's not so much, especially for the price. Pushing a bullet faster than they intended.

I am using N160 with the 110s and get excellent numbers. I wanted to keep my H4350 stash for my 6.5 and the 153s. The VV powders work pretty well. Figured I would try it with the lower cost and better availability.

I have my 6ARC if I want to run real slow with a 6mm. Get them going low to mid 2700s.

This must have to be something about the design/construction of the 147? While not the same bullet I'm pushing 62 ELD-VTs at 3277 out of a 7 twist barrel and that puts that bullet at an RPM of 337K.
I thought I read somewhere that the AMP jacket was intentionally drawn very thin, as it was easier to insure a uniform jacket thickness with a thin jacket. But, I can’t find a reference for that now.

Good ole Hornady.

Remember when my teammate @hic28 was blowing them up (factory 6.5PRC 147’s ammo) at the SHC Team Match. I was pushing Nosler 140’s at the same velocity (same spec’d barrels) and no issues with my bullets making it to the target.

Also happened a ton at the NF ELR match during 2020/ 2021. One kid who just had gotten sponsored had to switch guns on Day2. I had told him it wasn’t anything new about them blowing up. He was shocked.
Following year, saw a drastic decline in people using them.

Have them gotten better? Maybe.

But everything someone would call about said issue, they acted as if it was the first time hearing about it. Sure…

ATIPS or ELD-M’s. Same s* happened

So in summary
Guys running the 147’s in 6.5 Creedmoor report great results
Guys running them at 6.5 PRC velocities are having terrible results

I bet there is an Hornady Engineer somewhere saying “ I told them the jacket would not hold up at PRC velocities”

As to the quality control issue I wonder if the military contract they were awarded pushed production to the point of let’s just get it out the door

Had one come apart and baffle strike one of my suppressors. I was shooting a buddy’s rifle I threw my can on, it was a Savage chassis gun 6.5 whatever those were called. First round was near center target, second round I thought I punched the same hole because nothing else on paper, third round was three hits on paper with a sideways bullet outline being one of them. Pulled can off and sure enough, had a chunk taken out of the first baffle; was lucky on the minimal damage. Shot it without the can and had a couple more shotgun straight out of the muzzle. Called Hornady and they acted like it was a crazy conspiracy. Sent in the bullets for inspection and never heard anything until 2 new boxes showed up in the mail several weeks later; gave them away.
I’m sure part of it was a typical rough Savage bore but otherwise speeds were mid 2,700s if I recall correctly. This was 6-7 years ago and I haven’t shot them since.

I have shot 147 in factory ammo but not a lot of them. Didn’t have an issue but it’s clear that many have.

What pisses me off is the consistent reporting that Hornady acts like they never heard of this before while we know damn well they have.
