Custom rifle or take the money?

Found it somewhere else and they had one box left, so I bought it. Interesting.
The Oryx bullet is an excellent hunting bullet mushrooms even at low velocity but is constructed to were there is basically no jacket separation at higher velocity.
Me and my dad killed quite a few deer and hogs with them when I was kid in 6.5x55.

Seems like Norma/Ruag either is closing out the 6br Oryx ammo or doesn’t import it into the USA? Norma’s site sucks…

Agree thier site leaves alot to be desired.
They may actually be discontinuing some of the Oryx line of ammo for whatever reason I don't know since it's not one of the latest and greatest low drag forms.
Regardless they flat out work.

I guess I never really considered the 204. Maybe because I’ve been having dogs get up after being well hit with my 223… I guess I assumed the lighter bullet in the 204 wouldn’t help that situation
I’ve killed 12 yotes now if I recall with a 20 cal and never had one get away and only 2 runners. One made it 15 yards and 1 made it 60 yards but was a bit of an ugly kill. Both died in the field. My buddies hunt with 223 and while a proper bullet it’s plenty and works phenomenal but there is so many options that sometimes the wrong one is chosen and in the last month they have lost 2 dogs and had 1 runner so they will be switching bullets.

The 20 cal is extremely capable, here some with the 204 and 20 tac

That is a HELL of a group with a 20cal at 450yds, man! Sheesh.

I only shoot the factory Hornady Superperformance stuff, and the ES/SD is sorta all over the map. Accurate enough for me, sub-MOA, but nowhere close to your handload.

Also curious to know the specs on your two rigs. I don’t run across many 20cal lovers here.

Thank you. This is a really great shooting rifle. I’ve had 4 different 20 cals and this one is just a hammer. I started with a Remington sps stainless 204, then a Remington 700 vssf II in 204, then got a semi custom highly botched up 20 tactical for a steal which I ran for a little learning the caliber and then pulled it apart and built the one I now use.

My main calling rifle is the 20 tactical;
- ks arms sa3R action
- benchmark 1:11 twist and ks arms 1:10’twist 24” #5
- manners lrh sorched earth
- tt diamond flat shoe
- Dakota/lapua 20 tactical brass
- 39gr blitzkings at 4000fps and 35gr bergers at 4050 fps

My second set up I pull out on fields that have longer shooting angles, or have call shy yotes that tend to hang up.

22bra

- lone peak fuzion
- ibi carbon tactical 1:8 twist 26”
- manners lrh back in black
- tt diamond flat Shoe
- alpha brass
- 85.5gr bergers at 3130fps,

I use the Hornady 80gr VT for coyotes and 105gr for pig. The 80 gr it is very fur friendly just like hornady's v-max. But it is easier to shoot than .223 because it is not effected by the wind as much, with 6 arc requiring only half the wind hold value as .223 does. If you dont read wind well or dont want to worry about wind, the 6 arc is the easy button out to 300 yards.
If wind is a potentially common issue where you hunt , I’d go for something other than .223. It’s been an eye opener for me at the range, out to 500, the difference in my Model 12 LRPV in .223 and my Tikka Super Varmint in 6.5 CM. Almost don’t even pay attention to wind with the 6.5.

Fiocchi stuff is surprisingly accurate in my Howa, 32gr stuff anyway the 40gr stuff is terrible. Once I load for this one I'll run the 39gr blitzking or 35gr berger.

I won a contest where the winner gets a Blueprinted Remington 700 in Short Action caliber of choice, with a Kreiger or Bartlein Barrel, Bedded in a MDT XRS Chassis (or equivalent pricepoint)… or…$1500 cash.

I could have him build me a gun that I’d be happy with for life… Or I could take the money, buy a tikka, Bergara etc, put it in a decent stock/chassis and still have money for a bunch of ammo

We discussed 243, 6arc and 6gt for the most part. If I go with 6arc or 6gt, he would do load testing and give me the data. I’m a factory ammo shooter but I would have friends load the oddballs for me. We Briefly discussed 220swift and 224Valk as well.

This will be a pure coyote hunting gun and max distance of 300 yards. All tripod shooting. I don’t like to blow big holes in the animal either, I keep the nice pelts. I’m a bit torn on what to do, and would appreciate input.

Take the rifle, 16” 243Win and roll that fur!

I bought 243Win back when Obama was in the WH and I’ve never struck out on ammo.

I currently run 55gn varmagedon projos and I haven’t had a single coyote walk off. Took my deer w the trusty 100gn Soft point.

Pelts have been fine so far. I’m not afraid to sew a repair, haven’t seen any ham fisted blow outs.

Here’s an update on where I’m at with this…

—Leaning towards a 4 groove Kreiger barrel with 700 varmint contour
—20” barrel length

—need input on a Blueprinted rem700 vs Solus actions ($150 upcharge for Solus)
—MDT XRS chassis VS something like a Bell and Carlson as seen in the link below. I like the look of a stock better, but I understand benefits of chassis

Narrowed cartridges down to
-17Fireball
-204
-22arc
-6arc
-6creed
-22-250
-243

I’m having a dedicated night coyote gun built. 300 yard max distance. Tripod shooting only. I keep pelts so I don’t want to blow big holes in the coyotes

I used to use a 17 Rem with a boutique bullet called the Kindler 30 Gold, 30gr, which had a higher BC and was great for pelts and distance.

Then switched to 20 cal though. 204R is a little power house and I liked it except it's a loud round with a snappy recoil impulse in a light rifle. I'd prefer it for a factory ammo.

I have a 20 Vartarg AI now in a CZ527 which for me is varmint perfection for more than a few reasons. Still getting 3760 fps with 32gr in a 21" barrel and not a hot load. Only 19 grains of powder so the barrel doesn't heat up quickly, mild recoil impulse, not as loud, long barrel life, and easy to load for + reminds me of a mini 6mmPPC in precision.
I've owned a lot of varmint rounds over the years and I feel this one has all the attributes I prefer.
Man I wish there was a mini custom repeater action with mini AW mags for such cartridges!

The 22 ARC would be sweet for your exact specified use, but I'd go 243. You can get great varmint loads for coyotes and then use it for up to elk if you ever decided you wanted to. Its widely available and in more bullet choices than probably anything else on your list. I would also go shorter than 20" since you dont really need the velocity of a longer barrel and it'll be handier, especially if you end up putting a can on it.

Been there, done that.

I hope you don't but........

My guess is that you'll take the cash and piss it away on something unremarkable and not even remember what you spent it on inside of a month.

Please take our advice and take the rifle. What an awesome thing to have won. A good rifle will last a lifetime.

Any number of calibers would do the job. I personally would go with .308 but I'm ride or die .308.
