I’m in a union and there’s no sleeping on my job, at least if the train is moving or we have work to do.
Now put me in a siding or yard track for 6 hours to wait on other trains to get past, or for something to get fixed. If it’s the middle of the night you can bet your ass I’m taking a nap.

earlier commentary said that a pilot is required to get out of dock, but not once it was "in the channel" or something to that affect.
in any case, probably doesn't matter who is piloting the ship when it loses complete power. not sure if dropping anchor on the other side would have made a difference in which way the boat turned.
I flew over this today on my way home, thought something looked out of place.
A buddy of mine is a manager for a company that designs, installs, maintains, and repairs power generation and steering control systems on sea faring vessels. I asked what he thought may have happened. He was cool with sharing.

I doubt it was a union crew , I just saw a interview with the foreman of the team , he didn't speak English, used a translator ,he said the men missing were from Mexico, qaudamala,and Honduras, don't think the union hires illegals, I could be wrong, suppose they could get green cards , but it used to be that all gov work was done by union workers on the east coast , but times have changed I guess.

Ship that size have to have a US licensed pilot on board to take the ship to and from the dock. No auto pilot is ever used once inside the jetties.

The pilot is supposed to be very experienced, have back up generators, and steering systems, checked off before, heading out.
Like a pre flight check for aircraft, before take off to make sure redundant backup systems are working.
Probably a few intoxicants in his system, and the stench of a very recent dock slut...it gets em everytime.

Didn't they used to use tug boats on either side of ships to keep shit like this from happening until they got past critical infrastructures? Seems like back in the day and even now you sometimes see tug boats guiding ships in the Charleston Harbor.
Two tugboats on each side of that ship could have prevented that.

They had two tugs to pull it out of their berth, but let it go on its own before it was in the channel lane. The tugs suposedly tried to help as soon as they saw the Dali lost power but it was too late.
Wasn't there a pilot on board to get it out of the harbor?

I had high hopes... but NOVA has gone totally DEI and the whole thing is about interviewing chicks and DEI folks... who are just blathering on with worthless pap about what happened.
The %$#@ stupid broad Col. they brought in from the Army Corps of Engineers District was dumber than a sack of hair... she was gushing on about "Those are 4" steel beams... and they have been twisted all up. Think of the force it takes to do that. I've never seen anything like it..." Wow. Really? Because if that's the case and you are in awe of some twisted steel... maybe you should be making sammiches for engineers.... not prattling on about "wow, I can't imagine how much force it takes!"

Then you have the Drexel Structural engineer right off some banana boat. (It was a really big ship, mon!!). Was he REALLY the best structural engineer in America to have discussing the disaster? Really? You sure?
And the chick diver "Assistant Salvage Master" they kept interviewing... with the nose ring and tat sleeves, talking about how dangerous it is to dive in the steel. Bet there is one broad on the whole project who is a salvage diver.... And you have to put her on PBS. With her fucking nose-ring. And tat sleeves. Was she really the BEST diver to interview? Or was she just the Dykiest?
