I am in the US and have been invited to compete in Italy this fall. My understanding is that you need a gun permit to shoot there, but if I have an invite from a match director, they waive that requirement.

Has anyone have experience with traveling to Europe or Italy and competing?

I had to have a letter of invitation from the MD when I competed in France. I also had to get a customs declaration form so I could get back in the country as well. They limited the ammo I could with to 10 pounds I believe as well.

I've traveled a bit internationally with firearms.

You get an invite (or sign up) from the MD. Generally, the MD will have instructions for travel with firearms to the host country.

Check limits on weight and magazine restrictions. Also, make sure the airline you are traveling on will allow you to check in firearms. Some DO NOT despite all your forms, invitation, etc.

Have a CBP Form 4457 filled out and signed by a customs officer BEFORE leaving the US. Usually I get this done a week or so before travel.

Funny enough, it's relatively easy to travel abroad with firearms. I have never had issues.
