In all fairness, I just read the title of the video, haven't watched it. That shit is why I cancelled my plans in Mexico.
Cartels don’t make it a habit to fuck with tourists they own or tax all the tourist industry. You have to be where some random shooting starts or do something stupid for them to kill you on average. Now the cops on the other hand…Those look like Mexican nationals from my brief scanning of the story.
I wasn't planning on the touristy areas, I was gonna meet up with a buddy and explore Baja California. I'm sure there's some touristy areas there, but I wanted to avoid most of 'em.

You'll be safe in Baja, just about no Cartel activity there. I travel to Ensanada and San Felipe a lot being I live 2 hours away from the border and its an amazing place to spend the day driving around eating tacos, 4x4'ing, and camping.

Sounds like some one messed up severely. It takes quite a bit of effort to chop up 9 people. They must have pissed some one off.
I’m staying the fuck away from anywhere in Mexico. Last time I was there I had a few hours to kill before heading to Carlsbad N.M. from El Paso. Hotter than Hell and my dear daughter wanted to cross the border. I figured we’d eat lunch and I could drink a few beers. Of ALL days they were having an election and they weren’t selling Beer or Tequila. 
Time before that my brother met my ship when I returned from a West-Pac. He wanted to go to Tijuana …I didn’t. We did , both got shitfaced drunk , I got in a fight with a taxi driver over the fare , we headed back to the border and I threw up on a Customs Agent

I had some family that had a cabin and owned some land down on the Baja. The Baja 1000 went right past their place. My grandma used to go down their with them even at 90-95 years old. They sold it a few years and said it was getting to sketchy going down there.
I'm so afraid of stuff happening in Mexico I don't even go to Taco Bell.

There are tons of places south of the border with tacos and beaches, most Americans are retarded though so all they can think of is Mexico
Mexico is still cheap. Flights and all inclusive resorts elsewhere charge a premium for not being in Mexico.
If you have some specific suggestions I'm all ears. We've been to Cancun to sit on the beach and drink fruity drinks in the sun a few times now. Wife enjoys the beach, and I humor her.

I remember my brother had to pay a “ puking on a Customs Agents “ uniform cleaning fee. Think I got a “stay out of jail “ pass because I just returned from a long deployment ?
Dominican Republican, Beliz, Costa Rica, hell you can fly to Hawaii cheaper than a lot of interstate flights and then you have the beaches and hotels without all the foreigners and diarrhea
A friend of mine went scuba diving in jamaica every year, it wasn't super expensive and they provided everything

My work constructing manufacturing facilities required I travel extensively to several cities in Mexico including Juarez, Reynosa, TJ and Monterey. It wasn't bad in the early 2000's but by 2010 it was getting quite bad and on more than one occasion we saw dead bodies in the street or hung from over passes. Got to the point the company finally prohibited us from traveling into Mexico. My niece had her wedding in Mexico a couple of years ago in San Miquel and I refused to go. Unless you absolutely have to go stay the fuck away from there. The majority of the trades on my jobsite are Hispanic and great people to work with and it was the same with the people I worked with in Mexico. Its unfortunate Mexico is so fucked up.

I'm at the end of a one week dive trip to Cozumel, but not sure if that's considered Mexico for this conversation.
Have the reefs recovered? It was spectacular before the hurricane. I went back 3 years after and was destroyed. All the soft coral was gone and the hard stuff buried under what I call "the snow". Haven't been back since. How's the cartel action on the island? If you get a chance the cenotes in cancun are unbelievable.
We’re still the best damn country on the face of the Earth. Bar fucking none.
Reefs were pretty wrecked, but a few good spots. Plenty of sea life. There was a heavy police presence with the festival earlier this week. And with 4-6 cruise ships docking every day probably fairly safe.
From Montana flights to Hawaii are 3-5x the cost, and hotels are stupid $. I was really disappointed in the food there also. Last time we went to Maui there were homeless encampments on every public beach.
Jamaica, DR, Costa Rica are all double the cost on flights also. Last time we priced Jamaica it was over $5k, while Cancun was less than $2k.
