I went out to the range today and at the end of the session I shot an AQT target for funsies and wow, I'm rusty.

I still got an "expert" score but compared to the last time I shot this target I was down over 20 points and I was exhibiting bad habits, so it'll just have to be something I work on. I'm thinking about putting a red dot on the rifle, since I tend to shoot red dots better. Does anyone have any experience with these mounts?

My point was a red dot is not an accuracy aid. It’s a speed aid.
You are correct, I have not a fucking clue about Appleseed. Nor do I care. I know enough to realize that if you cannot hit that target with iron sights nothing is going to help.

My scores bounce around from event to event. I'm in the expert range too, never got a perfect score, but been close. Sounds like you need dry fire practice.

Personally, I think the dot sights far inferior to a good parallax adjustable scope.

TM were you using OEM irons or Tech Sights?

I'm using Tech Sights and they're very effective but in my experience, between iron sights and red dots on the same rifle, I'm more accurate with the red dot.

I don't think some people realize that Appleseed is offhand sling shooting...

Haha no doubt, but it's not all offhand, there's also sitting/kneeling and prone stages with the sling.

The prone position is very stable with lots of time. The points are also double, a perfect score on the prone isn't hard, and I like a scope for that. My eyes are also old, so maybe not needed though.

Looks like that worked out well for you Trigger Monkey! Score of 240+ with optics or 230+ with iron sights is worth a distinguished patch. Since the red dot isn’t magnified I would say it counts for the iron sights category. Good job.

In any event, a nice improvement in score! The all time best I’ve done is either a 244 or a 246 with a bolt action cz455 with a 3-15x SWFA set at 5x. The perfect 250 score eludes me, but I will still try for it again this year. The Appleseed AQT is harder than it looks, especially to those who have never done an appleseed, 4H or DCM CMP C.O.F.

I’ve started transitioning to red dot sights from irons for both rifle and pistol the last couple years. They are a great learning tool as they show you what you are doing wrong during trigger press/follow through if you are patient enough to get that info and apply it. I wish I wasn’t such a lazy shooter.

I used to shoot these Appleseed events prior to competing in high power at Camp Perry. I credit
the two day, fast paced Appleseed as a excellent way to prepare for the national matches. I used
the 10/22 with tech sights most of the time, however I did it with a M1 Garand once.
