Any 8.6blk guys here? Looking to reload subs. Primarily 300gr smks and 350gr makers.
I have tons of reloading info on 8.6 Blkout.
First the 3 twist is dangerous.
I tried one when they first came out and would not recommend this caliber in 3 twist.
I infact took the 3 twist Faxon barrel off the AR 10. And chambered a 6.5 twist in a bolt action. Now it's a dual purpose cartridge, high velocity with either jacketed or copper bullets no dangerous limitations on velocity.
I would not own an 8.6 blackout in 3 twist.
It's so limited in velocity and bullets that are expensive. Plus being mostly a 950 fps gun to make it safe, or expensive copper bullets for higher velocity that are not accurate and it usually has a high velocity variations...no good for sub shooting even at 100 yds.
The 350 Maker has to be 1000 fps or less to 850 fps in the 3 twist to perform correctly...but in the 6.5 twist as fast as you can, without the petals blowing off.
The 8.6 Blakout has too much cases capacity to be a good only subsonic caliber, and too little to be a good super caliber.
So before carrying around a heavy AR 10 in a badly designed 8.6 sub caliber with a ridiculous 3 twist that does nothing but offer problems....Get an AR 15 in 338 Spectre or the new 338 ARC.
Do yourself a favor and throw the 8.6 Blackout, away....especially for beginners.
Since I shoot both the 8.6 Blackout with 3 twist and 6.5 twist and the 338 Spectre with its 6.5 twist...I have some opinions.
The tiny cased 338 Spectre is the best sub caliber I've ever shot with bullets from 160 gr to 300 gr. It's very accurate with single digit SDs in every load...one powder, Lil Gun, for everything, subs, supers, jacketed, or copper, same powder. Load on a Dillon progressive still low SDs.
The new 338 ARC is almost identical but I don't have one...waiting 6 months on a reamer.
The 338 Spectre and 338 ARC side by side.
The 338 ARC has about 1.5 grs more capacity with an 8 twist...may not be appropriate for current Maker bullets...
But Maker has 4 or 5 variations especially for the 6.5 twist 338 Spectre.
The 338 Spectre is totally easy...no struggle here is you 300 gr hunting sub load note the low SD numbers. And your 300 SMK load.
Your choice chance on blowing up you muzzle device, limited velocity, poor accuracy with copper supers and subs with the 3 twist. Expensive, ridiculous and always trying different components to make it work
Or carry a light AR 15, and does a better job any 338 bullet, no speed limits, no danger, even the cheap Speer hot core for accurate plinking. No worries, put a bullet in the case add more Lil Gun for suppers, load on your progressive press.
