408CT twist rate.

Figure out what bullet you’re going to shoot, look at manufacturer minimum twist and go with that

There are downsides to too much twist. Dont over do it and don’t go tight for a heavy and then choose a light bullet

And whatever velocity you think you’re gonna get (ie what you WANT), subtract 100 fps and make sure you will be satisfied with that, cuz guys post only the high numbers and you might fall on the other end of the disteibution

What brass?

Oh, by the way, if you mean this ammo that Cheytac loads with the “balanced flight projectile”

I would do some more research because there is basically nobody shooting that ammo or projectile

It is a lot of money to spend, and I would go with something tried and true like cutting edge bullets

Finally, and I’m only trying to help, if you don’t reload, it might be a bit premature to be getting into a 408 Cheytac. You are asking to have your weapon idled for months or even years on end if you don’t have a reliable source of ammunition, which for that cartridge pretty much requires reloading.

I used to reload pistol rounds years ago, but nowadays I've only been ducking reloading due to lack of space. I know rifle rounds are a whole different beast on top of doing all the work to load costly ulr rounds as well. I have a buddy who is very good at reloading helping me get started up for 8.6blk, 6arc, and 223/556. Also been wondering about barrel lengths for 408CT also if you could help me out there. It will take a while to build my ulr rifle, especially with taking my gf to Australia this year also and blowing 6k on my 8.6 build lol. I'm honestly predicting a year unless work picks up more. I will continue to do more research and always much appreciated.

I’m biased but I’d consider 375CT. Just has a larger following; components easier to get, a bit cheaper, more load data available

With either I’d consider 30-36” on the barrel

If you wanna shoot factory ammo, go 338LM or 50BMG. 338 will outperform your ELR skills for the first 10 years you’re into it

But 50 BMG (and 416 Barrett) are a major step up in $$$. Primers alone are $1 each, powder $2/shot plus brass and bullet and non-standard reloading equipment

And everybody knew I was gonna say it, but consider the DT HTI for your base rifle

and...justifiably so .. its a superb ELR rifle!!

My mate shot this at 2500yds just recently with my 375CT..

This right here.

Cheytac also WILL NOT provide any load data for the projectile. That should tell the OP all he needs to know about the extent to which the Cheytac tested it and how safe it is.

Everybody else can provide load data for projectiles they make.

CHEYTAC is basically a defunct company.

They enjoy no respect in the community whatsoever and I’m not sure how they are even still viable except for naïve people watching old M2000 intervention videos

They sent me a batch of 375 ammo 12 years ago that was literally rupturing the cases longitudinally. I sent them back to them and they said that the loads were only over pressure because of “some of our competitors chambering or bore size”. They took no responsibility and they passed the buck. They were loading the 350 Ciara matching with 136 GRAINS of RETumbo, which is wildly over pressure.

THE BALANCED FLIGHT PROJECTILES I BOUGHT DIDN’T SHOOT WORTH A SHIT. THERE WAS ALSO SOME BUSINESS ABOUT THEM BEING IMPROPERLY SIZED FOR CERTAIN BORE AND LAND AND GROOVE DIAMETERS, WHICH, OF COURSE THEY ALSO BLAMED ON THE BARREL MAKERS WHEN IT WAS MORE LIKELY A BAD BULLET DESIGN.

Sorry about the all caps was an accident.

But now you know that CHEYTAC space USA is a complete shit show and you should be aware

And I agree with the above post that Desert Tech ammo is reliable

If they are really getting 2700 ft./s out of a 446 grain with a BC .57, that is a decent load if of course it’s stabilizes in the one to 13 twist

However, $17 a round? Are you fucking kidding me?

So we are back to square one: you should not buy a CHEYTAC chambered rifle if you are not capable of reloading for it

Same with 416 Barrett

On the other hand, factory 750AMAX can be had for about six dollars a round if you pay attention, and I basically can’t load it for that even if I get the case for free (primer $1 powder $2 projectile $3, plus my time)

ZAM - pls back up and tell SH readers what your application is for this rifle. Plinking, or just-so-I-have-a-big-boomer, or ELR competition, or - and, if multi-use, rough percent of the time used for each? Tks.

Notwithstanding that you ordered ammo way before the rifle build (why?), that initial expense is a small piece of your total project cost - i.e., easy to walk away from it. As noted by other posters, .408 CT is not really the preferred solution for anything. 375 CT or 416 Barrett would be more mainstream - 375 CT being a lot less expensive to feed and with a lot more data and options.
