Hello everyone,
I am looking for recommendations for a muzzle break for my competition 5.56 ar15. It will be attached to a 20 inch barrel.
I am looking for a good balance of recoil reduction and blast deflection. Fast follow up shots and spotting my own misses are very important, hence the need for a break.

I've been pretty happy with the PRI Quiet Control brake. It's not blasty from where I'm at and it offers good recoil control. When I'm switched on I can do about 1/2 second splits on a IPSC at 400 from prone.

Huh, didn't know they finally updated that article. Sweet.
Most of those brakes would look massive on an AR though, and some rules sets have brake size restrictions.
Not many of them are in 1/2x28 thread either, which is presumably what the OP has.

Shooter. My shooting partner punishes me with his so I need to return the favor
The PA Hypertap has been one of the best available for a few years. Top tier recoil reduction, tunable, light and small, not blasty for the shooter at all.
The PA M4-72 is probably the only brake I've had that knocks the shooters hat off. It's effective, and on a 20" barrel it won't be as bad, but man, I wouldn't go out of my way to buy one again.

Check out Unrivaled, I have their UB tunable brake on my run and gun ar. Ive been every impressed with the performance and my rifle has like zero muzzle rise. I can hit some pretty fast split times with it and still keep on target. That being said the brake is nasty and would kick up alot of dust shooting prone. If this is more of a long range gun id just get a can for it.

The PVA Jetblast is available in 1/2-28, self timing, has excellent recoil reduction and no concussion back on the shooter. It checks all the boxes that @bross412 is looking for and it's very affordable compared to a lot of other options on the market.
It's also proven to be effective on precision rifles where there is no tolerance for brakes to cause POI and group issues.

Was just coming in to post this. When I use a brake on my 6ARC for matches it’s a Jet Blast and works great. Doesn’t send blast back at shooter which is nice. Also being self timing there are no crush washers or issues with timing.

Id put the ATS break in the mix as well not sure if they have 1/2 in muzzle threads available though
