I’m trying to clone a M40A3 and have the badger bottom metal. Would it be inaccurate to put on an MST-100 if I can find one? I know they switched over to the badger around 2007, but not sure when they went to the Schmidt and Bender. I also imagine that there were rifles that went out with one of the upgrades but not another?

I've been in this rabbit hole for a while. I think that it's fine. You could consider it a "transition rifle." I've seen the S&B scopes on A3 rifles. So, i can reason out that you had a Marine that liked the MST and they hadn't been retired yet. That's the direction I'm going.

The guy who would be the most help here is @USMCSGT0331 .

From my EXTREMELY basic knowledge; I believe that the Unertl 10x were put on some of the first A3s, but those might also have had the DD Ross bottom metal too during that time frame. From memory, I also don't think that the S&B hit the rifles until around 2003, and then you had some Premier scopes on there too for quite a while.

There were a lot more variations of parts and optics scrounged and put together for the Corps than one might initially think until they start venturing down that rabbit hole mentioned above.

No, don't use a Unertl MST-100 with a Badger Ordnance M5 bottom metal. We switched to the S&B M8541 SSDS in 2006, and that's what was used on the A3's from then on. We didn't get the Badger M5 bottom metal until years after the switch from Unertl to S&B. If you're building an A3 with a Badger M5, use an S&B scope.
