I’ll post both.

So the story….

A teacher showed this video to ( I believe 5th grade class? Could have been 6th) his class. It was at the end of the hour and there was not time to discuss any of it. He excluded slides 18-20.

The district did an investigation ( HR did a hit job on him ).

It was brought to the school board and the accused asked for a public hearing so it’s on video.

He was accused of being a racist and distributing/contributing racist views towards Asian people. He has played this video for the past 5 years.

One student ended up going home in tears and complaining to his parents. A official complain followed. A legal opinion was given to HR and given to board members.

Discussions followed in an open session. One member was pragmatic and openminded, the remaining members TOTALLY FREAKED OUT!

The vote was 4-1 in favor of firing.

This was supposed to be a leaning conservative district.

Does that area have to get their intended curriculum approved by the School District?
Did he do so or did he just "wing it"?

Let me ask this first.

Why would it matter what the subject matter was. If something is racist it should be irrelevant of the subject.

The subject was revolving around world pollution. I believe there MAY be 2 slides that apply.

Continue in whichever direction you like. I purposely left some info out in the original post to get your gut reaction to the video itself.

Let me ask this question as well. If the more inflammatory slides are factually true then how can they be racist in f shown to others.

Side note that is video is about a country and not a race.

I’m curious as to the direction this discussion goes.

meh, seems like the video equivalent of clickbait…stuff for the sake of stuff…lazy teaching if he was actually supposed to be teaching anything related to culture/“social studies”, out of context if it was a class on “spam and the internet age” which if he showed it to elementary school kids it likely wasn’t. Best case he was trying to get kids to think about verifying sources in research and how much utter nonsense is out there, presented as “fact”. Don’t really care if they fired him. More school boards should fire teachers who are off the rails.

There's probably more to the story. About the only way you can get fired in our district is dramatically changing enrollment numbers (like when a new school opens close by)- and even then you are reassigned in all but the most extreme cases- or touching/attacking/going-hands-on a kid.

If the dude was teaching an English class and in the middle of a Shakespeare lecture decided to go on a rant about China, told the students how Chinese people are evil, and then showed this video....

I watched the vid. The subject of whether this vid is relevant to his classroom subject is not the issue at all.

He was fired for being a "racist" and as far as I can tell there is nothing in this vid that is racist. Its about China which is a country, not a race. Its about the Chinese government in large part, which is also not a race.

And I note that in all (or maybe just most...not watching it again) the sources, like the NYT, were identified.

Knee jerk woke BS is all this guy's firing is to my mind.

There seems to be a school of thought in America these days that people's "feelings" are all important and trump all other considerations without recognition that "feelings" "and being offended" results from the intersection of two disparate things....the action (speech, act, whatever) and the recipients sensitivity...as in how fucking thin skinned and how entitled to their little fucking safe space they think they deserve.

So here’s my opinion.

If you watched the video it’s apparent that this was a hit job from the start. They asked the teacher to come in, didn’t inform him what it was about and then ambushed him with all of this. The details of said video interview are in the link.

This has ZERO to do with racism and everything with political correctness…. Everyone is equal no matter anything and at any cost, say otherwise and we will publicly crucify you at the alter of our god.

Now with that all said and if I was the ever powerful OZ of the school system this is what I would do. First off the hatchet man errr woman from HR WOULD BE IMMEDIATELY FIRED! Abuse of power and incompetence. Second 4 out of 5 school board members would be removed due to incompetence and an election held to replace them.

If you really wanted to get a good solid fix, make classical education mandatory for the entire district… Eliminate the teachers unions and empower the parents. Teach both sides of a topic and promote discussion in the class….. I’m not talking yes or no replies but actual answers and have them explain how they formed that opinion.

For better or worse, teachers need to realize that they are teaching under a microscope. And, if you are going to use any 3rd party material, you better be damned sure that it is on point- to the topic of the class- and be able to validate why it was used. If this is a class/lesson about pollution, teach about pollution. Everything else is extraneous to the topic of discussion and a potential point of contention- as the teacher found. He may not be a racist, but he gave the school board the hook they used to land him. I guarantee there is more to the story.

The board meeting was not a surprise.

The hr interview was most definitely a surprise. If you watched it, one of the first things they ask him is “ Do you know why you are here?” His answer was no.

He was also not allowed to interact in anyway at the board meeting nor could the members ask him any questions.

We then asked her if she thought her Chinese friends in school ate them.

Her reply was golden. “ Why would I think that?”

If you think that edited press article and the actual video are anywhere near the same you are EXTREMELY misinformed.
