    Getting banned from ARFcom

Meh, me and the owner had it out...I gives a shit... I got banned from 1911 forums for re-visiting a topic...actually it was for suggesting the 19111 may have seen it's day. Everyone has their little fiefdom they want to protect. Bob

Sidearms & Scatterguns Smith & Wesson M&P Night Sights?

Sights are pretty personal.. I had Hienies on my M&P's for awhile. I like the serrated front sight, with the tritium dot and no white outline & a plain black rear sight. Having said that, I switched my two full sizes to Dawson adjustable's, really like them, and moved a set of heinies over to...

    Sidearms & Scatterguns First 1911

1911's have rails for the same reason newer service/duty type pistols have rails....so you can out a light on it. I think most 1911 enthusiasts would call a Wilson, Ed Brown or Nighthawk a "semi-custom". I suppose it's much like choosing a precision rifle. much of it is cosmetic...

    Questions regarding joining military.

It's good thing a lot of other guys didn't join the military with the sole purpose of what it could do for them later in life, or a "whats in it for me" attitude. The best decision I ever made was to enlist, and be a Paratrooper, in the 80's no less... I never had much use for people...

    Sidearms & Scatterguns First 1911

I attended his 1911 operator course that he did with Ken Hackathorn. The issue I see with certain double stack guns, is the length of the mag is constrained or dictated by the length of the original grip. Lifting that many .45 cartridges takes some effort, and usually the spring is compromised...

    Sidearms & Scatterguns First 1911

It's not that MIM is bad, it's that bad MIM is bad, just like bad casting or forging. Kimber had a run of bad parts that were failing quickly, that may have been resolved. Most of them use MIM parts. In some applications it's not an issue, other places, it may be. Colt uses a forging for the...

    Sidearms & Scatterguns First 1911

The negative Kimber feedback comes from numerous issues with poor quality mim components, poor QC assembly and a poor firing pin safety. Keep in mind, that for many 3-5K is an insignificant round count. As LAV pointed out in a 1911 operator class, many 1911's will be "reliable" for 5K +/-, but...

Hacksaw+Rem 5r= Poor man's Gladius? *Updated with results in 1st post*

A few years ago, I took a "Heavy carbine" class with John McPhee. He told us how they used a dull hacksaw blade in a tent in the desert to cut down an SR25. Said the it looked like a slant brake AK, but they took it out and started killing bad guys with it.

    Sidearms & Scatterguns First 1911

It should be a .45, because the gun was designed around that cartridge. Same as it should be a single stack, 5" w/ bushing gun. 1911 SME such as Vickers, Yam & Hackathorn agree on that.

Lot of good info on 1911 selection over at 10-8Performance and Modern Service Weapon There's a whole lot that goes into selecting a 1911, from cost, to use, to expected durability. Bob

Sidearms & Scatterguns Sams Custom Gunworks

Theres nothing special about a MEU-SOC gun. It's just another 1911. Dave Berryhill used to build MEU-SOC style guns, old style and new style. I think he used to have a copy of the original style sight also. It's just a collection of parts that someone else thought were the shit..or what they...

Sidearms & Scatterguns Sams Custom Gunworks

David Sams rebuilt my Hi Standard, and it looks and functions great. I may send it back to have the barrel re-lined. He does custom work for Hi Standard. He is a former AMU armorer, and came highly recommended from a former AMU guy I "know' from another forum. I spoke to Dave about a 1911...

Sidearms & Scatterguns 1911 budget build

IMO, if you plan on carrying it, there is a lot of to address. As noted sights, grips, BT, etc are all nice to have. But reliability is paramount, and you'll need to run a quanity of your chosen carry round thru the gun. You will also need to address common failure points, like a low...

Sidearms & Scatterguns 1911 budget build

What do you want to do with the gun? Carry? Range toy, etc. Is it a "Mil-Spec" or a "GI", if it's a GI, IIRC they are assembled in Brazil, not just the frames, and many of the small parts are of lower quality. I would start with a high quality properly fitted and tuned extractor and forged...

Sidearms & Scatterguns 1911 Quality vs. Price

Aimless, I'm confused..I thought this was a discussion forum, where people discuss topics. A question was asked, and I brought forth some things I've learned over the years. But, since it wasn't a short tweet of an answer, it's "pontificating"? The OP asked what seperated more expensive...

Sidearms & Scatterguns 1911 Quality vs. Price

What JMB envisoned is up for debate..he also envisoned a gun with two links on teh barrel, and no grip safety, etc. Orginal blued 1911's(not 1911A1's) were hand fit by the Colt factory..loose clearances were not part of the design. Only later during WW2, did tolerances loosen...maybe. I think...

Sidearms & Scatterguns 1911 Quality vs. Price

Asperly, I may have read to much into your posts..apologies. It came off to me as some of those I conteneded with on the otehr site, especially with the "ninja" term. Heres what I've "heard" Ron, believed the gun should have as heavy a spring as will function Vickers and most others...

Sidearms & Scatterguns 1911 Quality vs. Price

Of course not. I went thru the same type of BS arguments over at a 1911 centric forum. If your gun didn't look like it left Hartford in 1943, is was tacticool" and full of geegaws, and other deragatory terms. Every professional shooter that put a Novak sight and Beavertail on their 1911...
