    Vintage Sniper Rifle Picture Thread

My FN-49 in 8mm and a 7x57 that I got to shoot were, in general, more accurate than many of the M1's that I've shot. There are a number of variables though, ammunition being #1. People not using the correct load for an M1 is an example. The FN-49's I shot had handloads which I loaded for and...

    Mk27 Mod 1

By years and use this belongs on this thread. Funny how over the years Big Army has stepped in and kept audit authority over SF, and a lot went away. Always with an eye on politics in mind. The big reason we went with the M9 was to appease Italy and help maintain our bases in their country...

When the "Worst "is still collectable

I don't know how these get listed as the "worst" sniper rifle ever. Originally they used 8mmx57. A lot of German surplus ammo was acquired and used. While not the boutique round of the day, they were made to remain stable through their 1-9.44" twist out to 2500m. Better than anything we...

Guns I laughed at but now regret not buying

Glad you didn't laugh and brought it home. They are excellent guns. I have the Citori version, but so what, it was built at Miroku. Best bird hunting gun I've ever owned. Took 29 quail down in Nevada one year out of 32 shots. Just pattern it, and see how it fits. I'm kind of short and...

Guns I laughed at but now regret not buying

This kind of goes hand in hand with old 1903's, Mausers, Enfields and Mosins. There were literally barrels full of them that took years and years to sell for as cheap as $20. My dad always commented they were just old pieces of junk. Nobody knew which ones were the good ones. Well, my dads...

Guns I laughed at but now regret not buying

Remington 788. They were on sale at a business that was going out of business. All the guns were marked down unbelievably. I got a Rem 700 in .243. for $240~ish. Could have had one of the 788's in .223 or .308 possible 6mm Rem for $150.

    Oops...

It's a 1903 action. Sorry. The cutout/boss on the right side. That's what threw me. I was thinking 1903's were solid. The recoil lug does look like a 1917, though. And, of course 1903's have a third recoil lug on the bolt and 1917's don't. I have mostly corrected my previous post. Again...

    Oops...

First, This is [edit] a 1903. It is NOT a U.S. Model of 1917. Totally legit it would have a Winchester barrel. It has obviously been modified (sights) from original for competition. Interesting factoid, the 1917 was the basis for the models 51 (You and I will never see one) 54 and 70. Not...

We never had AR's that didn't have carry handles.

    FBI Sniper Rifles

We've had M177's since Vietnam. They morphed into the Car-15, which is now the M4. Unfortunately due to a lot of bullshit lies about how the 'mouse round' was incapable of killing, bigger rounds were preferred. The truth is higher velocity kills better than a bigger hole. However, if the...

    FBI Sniper Rifles

MP5's ain't worth a SHIT! Don't matter if they are 9mm .40/10 mm or .45. They don't have enough range to hit past 100m. Let alone energy. And for up close they all have a bad tendency to over penetrate. I would far and away take some version of an AR-15 over an MP5.

    Vintage Sniper Rifle Picture Thread

541's came along in the 1980's Remington had target versions of the 510, 511 and 513 series. That I know of. Probably more... I loved my 541S and 541X. The former was traded to get a Browing O/U Citori. The latter was sold to help fund my next aircraft job move.

It's here because it's "Snipery" and vintage. The military (AMU) did use these, if only on a limited basis.

Info needed, .300 savage and 250-3000

As noted above in this thread, the .250-3000 sold. To a collector. Where the OP was happy to get it to, as that person was very appreciative to get it. I did not know the Stith mount had collectability with these. I had a Pachmyr tip-off that was made for these. But, since it was drilled and...

As an update, in communication Habu64, the .260-3000 sold to a local collector. Who, according to Habu, did a backflip when he heard about it and saw it. I hope he sold it for more than a backflip. ;) 😁

Serial number will help tremendously if I can find the website again that dates them. Definitely later than 1909 as the .250-3000 didn't come out until 1915. First year production serials started at 175,000 and went through to 177,000~sumpin' Which would still put yours in the 19-teens...
