Range Report What effect would a 5k foot elevation change have on muzzle velocity?

Sorry... Negligible A decrease of say 2 psi in altitude from sea level is so small compared to the 60K + psi pressures that any change in muzzle velocity would be negligible.

Range Report What effect would a 5k foot elevation change have on muzzle velocity?

Sea level pressure ... 14.7 psi / in2 vs 60K Plus pressure? I'd say any change in in altitude would not be negligible in muzzle velocity.

    33XC vs 37XC

I'm not sure if it's true but I heard that the .338 cal will not be allowed to compete in the K2m competition next year. As mentioned, you have to spot your hits to make corrections which can be tough to do out past 2000 yards with a 338 cal bullet.

Hunting & Fishing Idaho 16lbs weight limit on hunting rifle

True.... But just lets see you lugging that heavy beast in mountain terrain at 8000' elevation! Then pack out all that meat to your base camp or truck.

Hunting & Fishing Idaho 16lbs weight limit on hunting rifle

It's for the reasons you mentioned that I agree with a weight limit but 16 lbs is a bit light for a well equipped 338 Lapua,.... Which IMO is absolutely the best tool for long range elk hunting and any 30 cal magnum caliber a close second. Setting the weight at around 17-18 lbs would allow those...

    6.5 PRC VS. 7 SAUM

Also ADG will be coming out with 7mm SAUM brass later this year. I'm thinking of going with the 7 SAUM instead of 6.5 SAUM for a new build. The selection of high BC bullets is much better for 7mm. IMO- If your shooting past 1000 yards the 7mm is a better choice. Only problem I see going to a...

I've used your resource guide also. Invaluable tool for the ELR crowd. Don't forget about Warner tool for your gunsmith list.

Hunting & Fishing Idaho 16lbs weight limit on hunting rifle

If its a AX/MC with the above mods it will be close.... Or you could just buy a Sako TRG 42 or a Christensen Arms MPR in .338 Lapua...Problem solved!

Well said!! Animals are not moving targets. First you learn to hunt up close and then develop your skills to shoot far.

Hunting & Fishing Idaho 16lbs weight limit on hunting rifle

Nope.....Bad idea! There are a lot of northern hunters that use .375''- 458'' calibers for moose, elk, and big bear. Then we have the .50 cal black powder rifle and handgun hunting crowd. I used to hunt elk with a 15 lb. 416 remington at 8000' elevation in Colorado. I also own a 416 Barrett...

Hunting & Fishing Idaho 16lbs weight limit on hunting rifle

I'm good with the weight restriction but can't understand why they set it so low? From what i've been told the weight is including the bipod, if it is attached and ammunition in the magazine,,,,In other words, as carried weight, Take a 338 Lapua with some good optics, bipod, etc and you could...

The new 33XC & 37XC cartridges designed by David Tubb

So Dave, Please correct me if I'm wrong but looking at the chamber print it appears that the cartridge is no longer a rebated design but basically a longer version of a 338 Lapua? Great design! Seems like it would be a perfect fit for the Surgeon XL single feed action....

The new 33XC & 37XC cartridges designed by David Tubb

Actually, I believe the XC case is a bit wider than the Rigby. Somewhere around .6" width at the base and using a rebated rim, I suspect the the base width is closer to the .378 Wby width measured at the belt. Although this is designed for ELR, I think this would make for a great bear, elk or...

Hard to believe they would do that!. Especially when the ELR type shooting is just taking off!!

Hyper Stabilized Bullets - Jim Boatright

Jim, So I got thinking...If you should drill out the base of the bullet then the bullets moment of inertia will change and the bullet will resist being spun up compared to a solid copper. Inversely, it would resist being spun down.... Correct? So, if this is true we would need a little less...

Best ELR cartridge in standard LA

Although I think that the 300 PRC will be a nice compromise for a long range hunting and a 2000 yard ELR platform I would still choose the 300 RUM or an Edge version for target only. BTW - ADG is now making brass for the RUM cartridges.

Hyper Stabilized Bullets - Jim Boatright

Jim, Good info! You mentioned that one might have to move to a slightly slower powder for the faster twists. A lot of the ELR shooters are shooting the slowest powders available and going to a slower powder is not an option. I would think that using a bore rider type bullet or other designs...

Hyper Stabilized Bullets - Jim Boatright

Jim Would a mild gain twist be of any advantage ( 11 to 10 ) or would you suggest going with a straight 10 for a 50BMG. I will be going with a 36" Bartlein barrel. Schneider can't go any longer than a 32" and it would be conventional rifling. BTW ... When I talked to Bartlein they said that...
