Best ELR cartridge for an AR10 build

I wonder about extraction on it, and feeding... Have you found others that have successfully built AR10s around this cartridge? Barrel length is whatever you want it to be but there are sharply diminishing returns. The difference between 26" and 27" may be in the realm of 10-20 fps. .936 I...

    BWA 10x100

How are you determining powder ignition and burn characteristics? Sonic sensors on the chamber and barrel? A bit surprising if true since even with 50BMG primers in a 50BMG cartridge, the hotter IMI and RWS primers perform more consistently than the CCIs which implies the primer which is...

    BWA 10x100

I've heard this theory a number of times and I believe that it is wrong. If you are thinking that powder burns in a full case from the rear forward, and that the "flash over" increases the amount of powder ignited I think that is based on some assumptions about how ignition really works. A...

    BWA 10x100

The flame front will pass through the space between grains rather fast exposing all surfaces to hot gas. There aren't huge torsional forces inside a case. As pressure rises there will be differentials within the case but not big ones. Pressure force is normal (orthogonal) to all surfaces so...

    BWA 10x100

What Brian an I are referring to is a phenomenon in which a low charge of a slow powder is used. Often this is an attempt to get a reduced recoil load for whatever reason. Under normal circumstances, smokeless powder simple burns (quickly) but under these circumstances there is a rare...

    BWA 10x100

I've seen a lot of attempts to explain the phenomenon and while there are a number of reasonable theories, I don't know that anyone has ever measured an event. There was a DoD project trying to replicate it years ago and I think they fired 50% filled 308 cases using a slow powder about 18,000...

    BWA 10x100

You can get higher velocities by having higher sustained pressures rather than simply a peak pressure that falls off. Powder burn rates can thus be optimal or suboptimal vs other powders for that barrel/bullet/cartridge combination. This is why you see big velocity swings with the same...

    50 bmg

I kinda remember there being a range near bowling green but we've never run an FCSA match in the area as far as I recall. Elr ranges are kinda hard to come by. Closest I know of is in Lebanon VA but that is a pretty solid drive. I'll ask around though. Got to be something out that way. -Alex

Where in TN? There are some ranges in western VA that might work for you but TN is a pretty long state... -Alex

Best ELR cartridge for an AR10 build

Best I've seen was one that could manage 3 MOA with handholds but maybe I've only seen "bad" ones. Mediocre accuracy met expectations of soviet era crap but It was the ergonomics, recoil management, optics and even the way it sounded that I hated. -Alex

Best ELR cartridge for an AR10 build

Mag capacity may not matter as much cause a 20 round ar10 mag is a pain in the ass to shoot with a bipod, but mag length loads do matter. There is a real world niche for semi-auto capability at long ranges. As terrible (and if you haven't shot one I mean really fucking awful) as the Dragunov...

Best ELR cartridge for an AR10 build

JBM... glossing over that, the loads are a bit conservative compared to published loads. With a drive band solid (assuming you could fit one to mag length) you would likely be able to go faster than most published loads. In either case, look at the energy differential between 338 Federal and...

Best ELR cartridge for an AR10 build

So while I agree in some regards that ELR ranges depend upon the cartridge, 1500 yards plus is usually the accepted definition for ELR. I still think 338 federal and a fast twist rate is about the best choice. Going to be slow out the muzzle but you are going to end up with something much more...

Best ELR cartridge for an AR10 build

338 federal with a higher twist rate maybe. At least you'd be able to see splash and could shoot through transonic. Consistency at a mile is a lot to ask of a cartridge that size but you might be able to do ok. -Alex

    50 BMG brake

Yeah. A good brake will reduce perceived recoil by upwards of 70% -Alex
