Which Action for a lightweight hunting rifle?

For reference, my rock Creek #2, 26 inch 6.5 PRC Savage prefit weighs around 42 ounces. I paid around $500 or so from PVA. Mcgowen could do one of their barrels in a similar contour and come in around the $325 mark. Criterion has a sporter that is slightly heavier at 2.95 pounds for 24 inch (as...

Which Action for a lightweight hunting rifle?

How light do you want to go? When I was building my hunting rifle I made a spreadsheet with component weights. There are places where it is cheap to cut weight and places where it is expensive. Like backpacking equipment, you get to the point where that next ounce costs exponentially more. My...

Modern Winchester 70 pros and cons?

I had a bad experience with their extreme weather stainless rifles a few years ago. Cocking piece cut and cut into the cocking cam on the bolt. The material was obviously galled and felt like crap no matter how much grease I applied. Sent it back a few times, they gave me a new bolt and then...

    Bighorn Origin Build Thread

It's honestly a pretty straight forward job. Any machine shop or gunsmith with a mill should be able to do it. J wouldn't expect to pay more than $80.

    Bighorn Origin Build Thread

MHSA did it since they're local. They did an ok job, but I had to go in with a file and clean up the back end as the rounds were catching on where they had cut instead of the feed rails. They had cut for the box but didn't punch all the way through to the raceway, if that makes sense. Wasn't a...

Buy or Build Sub 7 pound hunting rifle?

Seekins has a new lightweight rifle out. Otherwise Tikka is hard to beat off the shelf for around $750. I'd really think over caliber choice, a sub 7 pound gun (assuming you mean with optic) won't be much fun to shoot in 300 WM. Depending on what other rifles you have I'd consider a lightweight...

    Remington Model 7 stock replacement

I haven't had issue with the bell and Carlson stocks I've had in the past. Some of their designs suit me better than the HS stuff and the price is right. I'd look over the models and try to hold them to see what fits best. They are both used on OEM guns, so your local store may have a model with...

    Bighorn Origin Build Thread

I have a Tikka stainless 270 action. What should I build?

280AI would be a nice handy package for pretty much anything in North America.

    300 prc vs 6.5 prc

If you're just shooting ELR off a bench I'd add weight to your current rifle. 20 pounds with a brake should be pretty mellow. Look up some recoil calculators and play with the numbers. I'm sure you can get your current rifle to recoil like the 6.5 PRC. On that front, I have an 8 pound ready to...

    Suppressors Pva rugged mount

Can't speak to the PVA mount (which looks nice), but I have rugged's 3 port brake on my 6.5 and have no trouble spots my own hits at 400+. I'm sure the PVA brake would be even better, but I don't see the need to replace my current mount. Maybe if I get another host. Check cashed on my rugged...

    Grayboe Stocks?

I don't think there would be too much work based on other barrel nuts I've fit to stocks. Have to remember without the shoulder the barrel is already a smaller diameter, so after the nut it may not be too much larger than a normal setup. A socket wrapped in 120 grit makes quick work in my...

Long action Origin switch barrel 223 to 300 PRC?

308 would probably be easier. My only thoughts is something like a centerfeed BDL mag that you can adjust the feed lips in for 223. Doubt it would work with the box being as wide as it is though.

6.5 PRC Build - Barrel Length and Twist

I'm happy with my 26 inch 1in8 barrel, but I'm running 140 accubond for hunting. Only 150 rounds through it, but able to hit 3100 with the 140 and H1000, but my node looks to be closer to 3050. Ok sure RL26 (if you can find it) will get you 3150 fps with 140.

    Suppressors Rugged Radiant 762

Just wanted to add in here in case nobody saw it, but PVA recently launched a self-timing brake that doubles as a rugged mount. Happily surprised to see some aftermarket support coming in.

    6.5 PRC Accuracy

I've had decent luck with IMR4831, but would recommend H1000 over it. If you can find it!

    Bighorn SR3 mag feed rails

I don't think you'll be able to run 308 in the MBE4 as that's setup for WSM cartridges. If I try to load 6.5 creedmoor in my MBE4 with a PRC follower they pop out, and that's with the correct feed rails. If you get a 308 box and follower you're closer, but as you said above, feed rails might be...

Change of plans to my LW build, DBM and WSM.

Not sure if it's discontinued or not. Main difference is the footprint (BDL vs M5). Depending on your stock you may not be able to open it up for the M5 or just need to have it re-inlet. I believe the BDL model is usually around the same price at red hawk etc.
