    2025 SHOT Show Optics

Yeah, it is funny how these things happen... I'll be testing this one out as soon as they have the new turret ready.

Wet Mounting Scope Mounts - Where It All Started

I usually add some thick grease to the insides of the ring/mount clamps and onto the top surface of the clamps (essentially, the three STANAG datum surfaces). Where I live there is always a lot of sand/dust, so I try to keep the amount of exposed wet lubricant to a minimum. How much it helps...

Primary Arms Optics - Discovery 2025: PLx Compact Long Range Scopes Unveiled

The simpler DEKA reticle is looking very good. I am going to try to do a livestream tonight, but it might be pretty late. ILya

I tried to convince them to add some reticle options, but no luck. ILya

Night Vision Help understanding non-prisim thermal clip on magnification

Risley prisms do not make any sense for modern thermal clipons. I think I talked about how they work in a livestream a while back.

Rifle Scopes New for 2025, the Kahles K540i

I am sure I mentioned it some point during one of the "explanations" videos, but I do not think I have ever done anything dedicated to that. I probably should, but the basic problem is that the whole eyebox business is kinda "non-linear". There are general guidelines/considerations, but they...

Rifle Scopes New for 2025, the Kahles K540i

Generally, wider AFOV eyepieces are a little bit harder to make with good eyebox. Narrower FOV makes it easier to achieve a good eyebox. Some of that can be mitigated by clever design (RG3 is a good example of that). Kahles’ wide angle eyepiece seems to have decent eyebox. Not exceptional...

Rifle Scopes New for 2025, the Kahles K540i

No that is not an optical fact. I have seen people make this argument before. It is usually some sort of a lazy derivation of the Rayleigh limit. That would apply if you are looking to resolve two very distant point sources (Rayleigh was an astronomer). When dealing with complex objects and...

    FOV issues and patents

Leica is one of the three oldest optics/camera companies in the world. In the photo and video world, they are easily one of the most recognizable name out there. Same goes for their binoculars to a good degree. With riflescopes, they have never been big and that's a shame. With photo and...

Rifle Scopes Meopta 2025. Big things comeing

Meopta is on my SHOT schedule. They have new people in charge who I do not know. I am curious about their plans. ILya

    FOV issues and patents

Leica Magnus was pulled from the US market because of slow sales. It had nothing to do with patents. After the European lawsuits, it seems like Leica and Swarovski decided that they have had enough lawsuits and Leica can sell anything they wan tin the US if they are so inclined. I was very...

    FOV issues and patents

Where a scope is manufactured makes no difference. It only matters where it is sold. In Europe, Swaro's patent has been nullified. In the US, it has not been challenged. If anyone wants to sell a wide FOV FFP scope in the US, they do not need to challenge the patent. They can just go to...

Rifle Scopes Question regarding NF beast 5-25

BEAST was, in many ways, a very influential design. That scope itself did not a ton commercially, but it spawned off several very successful ideas. It was very innovative in its own right. MOA does ruin it a bit. ILya

    Tract Toric 1-8

These are very well bult scopes along the lines of the rest of the Toric line. If you do not need day bright illumination, it is a very good option. For ARs, it has more eyerelief than I would prefer, which result in narrower FOV (relatively speaking), but beyond that I do not have anything...

Question about member regarding optics reviews

It is a very oddball German company. A couple that I have seen were decent, but unless you need a particular look, I would seek elsewhere. I think Charles from Darn Fine Shot brings them in. If you need a German 4x, they might be the only game in town these days. If you can live with a...

Do you run a SunShade and why or why not.

I've used black opaque optical paper for this when trying to figure out what sunshade length is optimal. It is not especially durable, but it works.
